Our big fuzzy mostly border collie bundle of love, Angus has been a part of our life for over 11 years now and has been a very loved companion, watch dog, and playful friend.
In the last few weeks he had been diagnosed with the beginnings of heart worms, a lapse of his med during my health issues started that. He had the beginnings of cataracts, ear and skin infections developing and finally, his kidneys started to fail. We took him to the vet who diagnosed the heart worms and they advised not treating that condition due to his age. They didn't believe he would last much longer.
He was meticulous about his potty time, never going in the house unless he couldn't hold it. He had never done it in the carpet, always on the tile. But the last few days he couldn't help it and didn't even know, I don't think, to ask to go out. I talked to the vet and she said that was the sign his kidneys were going finally.
My husband and I talked and we came to the decision that it was Angus's time to cross the veil. Our hearts tried hard to beg out of it but our heads knew we had to allow him to pass without pain or suffering.
Then the miracle happened. I looked online for a shelter pup that needed a home and the very first pup we found was a six-seven week old Sheltie female, already to go, shots, spayed, everything. We know the Goddesses gave the puppy to us to help ease Angus' passage for the kids.
Angus passed quietly and without pain in the loving arms of a Pagan nurse, who happened to be on duty today and who was very reassuring and comforting for me) and he had with him his "baby", the remains of a stuffed "frog" (my older son's puppy had worn most of "baby" out) and his newest rawhide bone. He will be cremated with both the baby and bone, along with his collar and leash. Once they are returned to the veterinarian, he will be returned to us and we will have a ritual in the backyard and scatter his ashes.
