Karma

Karma, by definition, is receiving what one gives, be it positive or negative. But I've seen people argue whether it's appropriate to cast a spell invoking the Threefold Law against a harasser or to just let it fall into the Goddess' hands and let Her deal with it as she sees fit. Take it into your own hands or let the gods handle it? Well, I've done both.

I have to admit, I don't have to best temper in the world. And if there's strife between me and a particular person, I usually let them know with my fists. Now, imagine me, a tiny Asian girl, flipping over a large oaken table on a rather tall and large soccer player. (Yes, this did happen. I was even flinging objects at his head.) Or what about the time I actually jumped on my desk, leaped over two more rows of desk, to pummel a kid twice my size (and probably a foot more) from above with my notebook? Yes, I know, I simply MUST learn to keep my temper in check. But think about it: what kind of gentleman would pick on a girl that is about their chest-level in height (if I'm even that lucky)?

And I got picked on a lot, even before I was Pagan. Through elementary and middle school, it was all ethnically-targeted, even though I grew up in this country. From the ignorant, "How come you don't speak with an Asian accent?" to being dismissed with a, "Who cares if you're from Taiwan and not China? All Asians look alike anyway." It was frustrating, it was irritating, and it was humiliating. And during those turbulent years, I learned that a fist would make someone shut up a lot faster than a complaint to the teacher.

Then entered the high school scene, where I joined two minor activities about relatively the same time: Paganism and cheerleading. Actually, Paganism came first. My best friend, a hypocritical Catholic (hypocritical in the sense that she thought prostitution should be legalized and made a hobby out of shop-lifting), dropped me, and took the clique with her. I was horrified. High school, and I was without a clique. (Okay, stop laughing, I was a freshman after all.) Luckily, the Goths took me in (I see you cringing. Hush, and let me finish). I had absolutely nothing in common with these people. I was straight-edged, dressed preppy (which they made fun of all the time), but I was down-to-earth. A realist, and so were they. I liked having discussions and debates about where society had gone wrong, instead of superficial talks about clothing and makeup. And they were open-minded. To them, it was cool that I was Wiccan.

But then I joined the sport of cheerleading. (Yes, cheerleading IS a sport, despite what some people believe.) Guess what happened? I got dropped from my clique . . . AGAIN. All I had to do was walk into the cafeteria, and I could hear my so-called friends squeal, "Eww, here comes a cheerleader!" At first, they were just jousting. But then it got nagging, aggravating, and finally vicious. Anyway, I ramble. Back onto the topic!

Well, look at the people who made racial slurs at me. They got a smack upside the head. Whether or not it was karma-inspired, who knows? But after the first couple of times, I stopped hearing the slurs. It worked, needless to say, and I consider it an example of taking karma into your own hands. My former slutty friends? I think one of them actually got pregnant, and the other is going to spend the rest of her life flipping burgers or filing nails at some beauty shop or another. And my former Goth friends are suffering maniac-depressives, each of them attempting suicide every other week. They're also probably never going to get past a high school education, but hey, their choice. I consider them examples of natural karma.

What about magickally? Well, I remember there was this one girl on the squad. She used to physically push me around and constantly degrade me. But she only did this to me, and no one on the team really understood where my complaints came from. Plus, when I did complain, she made ME look like the bad one. So, after one particularly frustrating day at practice, I went home and lit a candle to my patroness: Lady Nemesis, goddess of karmic balance. (Perfect, eh?) I made it clear and simple, telling the Goddess that I couldn't understand why this girl chose to constantly pick on me, but I was sick of it. Next day, girl fell from a stunt, and SUPPOSEDLY hurt her ankle. She used this as an excuse to sit out the rest of practice, but my teammates caught her jumping and skipping around outside. No one ever believed a word she said ever again.

And another time, Mom hit me. Really hard. I was outside trying to fix a broken leash which was the cause of my dog to running off. But I was outside without a jacket, and Mom got mad. She was raised in the old country, and back there, smacking your child around was a perfectly acceptable form of punishment. But it was getting far too frequent, and I was sick of having pots and knives thrown at my head. I looked up at the moon, and in tears, asked, "Did you see that? Did I really deserve that?" Next day, Mom was picking up the dog from the groomers (had to get the dog cleaned after her rampage in the night), and she got into a car accident. She wasn't hurt (and neither was the dog who, by the way, is also my familiar), but the car was destroyed. Guess Lady Nemesis didn't appreciate Mom smacking me.

Anyway, I consider those two incidents definite examples of karma by divine intervention. There are many more, but I can't think of any major ones right now. Hope my examples of the different types of karma helps! Blessed be!
