There are many ways to ground yourself, and it is one of the simplest and most important practices to get yourself into when performing Magick or dealing with your day-to-day life. Grounding yourself is very important. The act of grounding and releasing negative energies can free you from feeling unbalanced, negative, and just plan weighed down from all of the energies you come into contact with throughout your day. It takes a little bit of practice and sometimes just a little bit of creativity, but before you know it, you will be grounding yourself without even knowing it.
Ways to ground yourself:
The Basics: Closing your eyes and taking long deep breaths. Imagine that all of your energy is gathering with each breath you take into yourself, and then releasing it away from you every time you exhale. Like blowing out a candle and making a wish. Breathing is very important in all grounding, centering and any magickal working as well as meditation.
EARTH: Go outside, find a nice cool spot in the grass or dirt, wherever is most comfortable to you. (This can also be done inside or anywhere you have the need to ground yourself) . Close your eyes and imagine yourself being ˇ§rootedˇ¨ to the spot like a tree. Imagine roots growing out of your legs and into the ground, reaching for the center of the earth. Gather up all of the excess energies inside of you and let them flow out of you into the ground. Breathing during this exercise is just as important as the visualization of releasing the energy into the earth safely away from you. This exercise can also be used to restore your energy or to get better control of your energy.
AIR: Obviously, go outside, hold your arms up into the air or hold them out like a bird with wings. Imagine yourself being carried away with the wind. Feel it around you and inside of you. Imagine all of the excess energies around you floating away. This is where you can get creative: you can imagine the energy leaving in balloons, or creating clouds, clouds with shapes, you can imagine the wind changing colors, or the energy leaving your body in rainbows. Be creative. Use the air as a guide for your own breathing.
FIRE: You can use several objects for this; candles, the sun, a light or an oil lamp/lantern. With candles, you can just do the breathing exercises of releasing your energy, only imagine your energy being burned away or lit up like the flame from the candle. Fire can be used as a quick and easy focal point for concentrating. With the sun, you can bathe yourself in its light to cleanse your negative energies or to refuel lost energy that is needed.
WATER: Use anything that contains water: Lake, pond, stream, creek, beach, shower, rain. While standing in the rain, visualize the rain washing away all of the dirty energy. It is cleansing and purifying. With bodies of water, place your feet or your hands into the water and wash them. Imagine the water washing away all of the impurities from the energy you are cleansing. This is also easy to do in a shower where you can meditate. Every time you take a sip of water imagine it filling you with pure and clean energy.
There are many ways to use the elements to ground and cleanse the negative impurities in or around your physical and magickal self. Be creative and have fun with it.
Dust off your shoulders. This is a simple act of “wiping” the energy off of your body and spiritual self. Just rub your hands down your arms from your shoulders to your hands as if you are wiping dirt off of your body. You can also do this on your legs, chest, and head as well. Keep an image of cleaning yourself forefront in your mind.
It is important to ground yourself before going to sleep. Having negative energies attached to you when you are sleeping can cause some unpleasant dreams. You can use any of the grounding techniques listed above. Doing this also allows you to have more lucid dreaming as well as helping you retain your dreams. Just as it is important to ground yourself before going to sleep, it is just as equally important to ground yourself when you wake up from a bad dream.
Spider webs! Nobody likes to walk through a spider web. This technique is for getting rid of icky, nasty, sick energies off your body. Take your fingers and begin at your chest. Pinch your fingers in front of your body as if you are grabbing a spider web that is clingy to you. Imagine an icky, nasty and sick spider web coming off and away from your body. Fling this spider web into the air away from your body. You might feel I slight tingling sensation when you do this, it just means you are doing it right. Continue to do this on your face, head, shoulders, abdomen, pelvic and legs. Continue doing this until you feel as if you are free of the icky, nasty, sick energy that has clung itself to you.
Mirror Magick is another form of releasing negative energy. Sometimes when you are releasing a lot of negative energy, you are releasing it into the universe around you. If you live by the three-fold law, this can be dangerous. This means you are sending the bad energies out into the world. With Mirror Magick you can direct the energy into a black void. With a small mirror at hand, sit and begin breathing slowly, clear your mind and begin to release yourself. Every time you exhale, imagine the mirror sucking the negative energies away into a tornado or vortex within the depths of the mirror. Do not allow this to happen with your good energies, only the negative and bad ones. You can use the mirror a few more times after this, but when the mirror begins to feel foggy or heavy, place it in a brown paper bag and smash it. You can then bury these pieces, or throw them into the trash (if you have a home with animals or kids that wonder the yard freely) .
And above all, just keep as many positive thoughts in your mind as possible. The will power of your mind is more powerful than you can imagine!
