This month’s New Moon is the beginning of the 2013 Lunar Year in the Chinese system.
This year’s animal symbol is the Water Snake, emphasizing wisdom, empathy and peacemaking.
The Albatross and The Sea Snakes
“Water, Water everywhere, but not a drop to drink.” I remember my mother repeating this line as a mantra - when she found herself a stuck in an antic filled moment with my brother and me. I think it was her way of counting to 10 before responding; distancing herself from parental knee jerk reaction to whatever mischief might warrant her prompt attention, frenzied intervention or creative redirecting skills. I also think it had something to do with her ability to be a “pessimistic optimist”, as the famous poem that this line comes from is a story of desperate circumstances. The entire passage is:
Day after day, day after day,
We stuck, nor breath nor motion;
As idle as a painted ship
Upon a painted ocean.
Water, water, every where,
And all the boards did shrink;
Water, water, every where,
Nor any drop to drink.
The lines are, of course, from The Rime of the Ancyent Marinere (The Ancient Mariner) , the longest major poem by the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, written in 1797–98 and published in 1798 in the first edition of Lyrical Ballads. I’m sure you remember it from high school or college literature courses on the Romantic Movement. It is a straightforward yet somewhat confusing story, filled with conflicting emotions, events and choices. It is a story of the heart. It is a saga of crazy things that go awry. Impulse, frenzy, fear and incompetence can be conceived as conviction.
Basically, there is a sailing ship with a crew. The ship gets pushed to bad seas because, well, that can happen out on the seas… an albatross is shot due to superstitious beliefs, the Mariner/shooter has to wear the albatross around his neck as a punishment from the collective. Eventually everybody dies except the Mariner …but everything gets worked out because he seems to forgive himself as he stares at the sea snakes and the ship magically finds safe harbor. The mariner takes it upon himself to wander the earth and repeat his tale to anyone he can wrangle long enough to listen, in particular someone on his way to a wedding. (As if that’s not an Aquarian riddle just on its own!)
Of course there are deeper symbolisms of diverse cultural phenomenon within the poem. The story suggests an Aquarian process wherein the collective experience of being on a boat requires a collective impetus to work together in a sort of unique bubble of time and location. The group has to function as a whole unit. One member of the group, “The Mariner”, makes a decision on his own by acting independently, thinking that he is doing the right thing, but all hell breaks loose. In the end, the sea snakes escort the boat home.
In this year of the water snake, I like to think about those sea snakes that bring the boat home in spite of whatever already happened. They live deep in their environment with wisdom, confidence and power; their behavior holds no frenzy. The element of water brings out emotional life and support that is compassionate and knowing. Snakes have their own unique primal place in our human repertoire of symbols – life/death, rebirth/transformation, knowledge, wisdom and power. The Albatross is linked to the sign of Aquarius-this magnificent bird travels far and is a weather watcher, a symbol of air, and pairs for life but is community oriented and free spirited.
Feb. 18: Saturn Retrograde until 7/7/13…. Degrees: 11SCORP32 back to 04SCORP49
This story includes whatever has been giving us difficulties yet another half year to deal with it and hopefully put things right…Scorpio doesn’t easily give up its secrets but with the nature of Saturn, it’s got to be too obvious to miss. What has been a seemingly unsolvable mystery will now become more clear as to what tools it takes to rebuild or bring in the demolition team.
Feb. 23: Mercury Retrograde until 3/17/13 Degrees: 19PISCES52 back to 05PISCES38
I suggest that Mercury Retrogrades manifest in very personal ways, like most inner planet transits. While the general theme involves a Pisces process – self-sacrifice, idealism and spiritual panacea, the personal experience can be one of extremes or completely absent from your radar. In general it is a time frame to reconsider meditative efforts, unconscious and/or subconscious behaviors and how the expressive arts can be helpful. Due to the sometimes delusional nature of Pisces, general statements can be misleading and sometimes unhelpful to any given individual. Seek community support, qualified help and other reliable resources if you feel lost at sea. Most likely, however, the retrograde will bring you home from a journey that has already been confusing enough. Just follow those sea serpents.
Mar. 08: Saturn sextiles Pluto 11SCORP15/11CAP15
This is the second of three sextiles in this Saturn/Pluto process – (Dec. 2012, and Sep. 2013 are the other two) . These slower moving planets work like gears for the entire populous on a collective level – moving us, hopefully, toward evolutionary constructive change. They are in the signs of each other – called mutual reception – like going to visit a friend who has gone to your house to see you at the same time you are hoping to see them at their house. Qu’elle chance! There is a deep relationship going on here.
On a personal level, we grind through a difficult realization: first, discovering the need for change, implementing the change and then getting used to a new paradigm as the change manifests. While that can be exhausting, if we keep up our physical strength, it can support the emotional and psychological strength it takes to transform. Make a list of “tools” and “resources” of any kind that are handy and then try to figure out what else you can use them for, and learn what their real use is too.
I had an old vacuum cleaner, one of the expensive kinds that keep going forever even though the smaller parts need repair and replacement. One day, the rivets that held the swiveling rug cleaner bar onto the hose/handle fell apart and just disintegrated, just from years of use. I looked absent-mindedly in the exact stash of assorted fixtures and found a long bolt that happened to have the matching nut already attached, just waiting for the moment to be useful. It was a perfect fit and slid right into the spot where the missing rivets had been. It’s still there, years later. It wasn’t any brilliant fix it job, but a combination of visualizing a need, knowing where the resources are and trusting that I could find a solution with the resources already at hand. The interesting part of the little experience is that I realized later that when the vacuum fell apart, I had vacuumed my way to the exact spot in the house where the assorted fixtures were sitting in storage, just waiting to be put to good use. Let things manifest in the environment they need to be in to transform.
