Moon/Planetary Musings: The Holly King and John Barleycorn

This year’s Cancer Lunar Cycle begins at the new moon on July 8 at the 17th degree of Cancer. (Always round up to the next degree) The Sabian Symbol for this particular degree of Cancer is the germ grows into knowledge and life. Keywords are: nurture, unfold, high potential, wisdom, to sustain an ideal.

Visit your chart to look for this degree, and work your germination of knowledge and life within the process of whichever house that degree shows up in. And/or, take time to be calm, use your meditations to intuit and sense your way to the area of your life that you’d most like to grow and enhance. What do you need knowledge of? What do you long to be doing, sharing, working toward? What seeds do you want to plant or have already planted that you are waiting to see emerge? What steps can you take to further their development?

By the time we reach the Full Moon, on July 22, the Moon’s degree is at the 1st degree of Aquarius. The Sabian Symbol for this degree is an old adobe mission. Keywords: durability, stability, symbolism, heritage, tradition.

Visiting with your natal chart again…where is this 1st Degree of Aquarius located? What do your intuition and senses lead you to “reflect” upon from your own traditions and heritages that are durable and sharable? What collective endeavors attract you like a bee? Are there particular retreats, symbolic tools, or rituals that are “standards” to you?

The main themes of the sign of Cancer are nurturing and responsiveness. The psychic links to others are conductors of our love, our emotional support, empathy and bonds. The Moon itself is linked with the sign of Cancer, a real world and metaphorical symbol of emotional conductivity, tidal rhythm and reflective patterning. Cancer also can represent how we embody our own nurturance, our loving relationships with our self and others.

Holly Moon – Holly King

A new section of the Moon Musings that I am adding in is about the Celtic Tree Moon. For the Cancer cycle – July to August – the Tree is Holly. Holly is one of my favorites – it has always been growing on my properties, or I planted it and watched it thrive. A symbol of the dark half of the year, which begin at the Summer Solstice, the energies are protection and strength. The Holly King during the waning light season and the Oak King during the waxing light season take their turns guarding and guiding the year. The shiny leaves and bright berries give us hope by the time the days are shortest. Many cultures have lore about the Holly tree – its uses are for weapon building and protective magic.

The season brings us to Lammas – Lughnasadh – the beginning of the Harvest season. It is a time for sharing our resources and our time together. We often think of Holly as a Winter Solstice or Christmas plant – and so it is sometimes difficult to focus on it in the middle of summer! The legend of Santa Claus himself stems from the Holly King and who better to remind us of giving and sharing?

Holly Moon cycle is a great time for putting your intent into focusing on your money resources and a popular spell is the Holly Money Spell. On the full Moon, (July 23) hold up some paper money in the moonlight and recite:

“Lady Bright, Lady Bright
Harvest abundant dreams tonight
Three times three times three times three
Prosperity returns to me”

And what better to then do but share your wealth with others!

The origins of the famous tune “John Barleycorn” as suspected to originate from an early Scots poem-song published in 1568 Here it is from a Wikipedia source. A little imagination will give you the words. This work was then adapted by Robbie Burns, the famous Scots Poet, and his version published in 1782 as the well known "John Barleycorn", set the stage for what is so familiar today.

Quhy Sowld Nocht Allane Honorit Be

Quhen he was yung and cled in grene,
Haifand his air about his ene,
Baith men and wemen did him mene,
Quhen he grew on yon hillis hie,

Quhy sowld nocht Allane honorit be?
His foster faider fure of the toun,
To vissy Allane he maid boun,
He saw him lyand, alace, in swoun,

Thay saw his heid begin to ryfe,
Syne for ane nureis they send belyfe,
Quha brocht with hir fyfty and fyve,
Of men of war full prevely,
Quhy sowld nocht Allane honorit be?

Thay rush*t furth like hellis rukis,
And every ane of them had hukis,
Thay caucht him schortly in their clukis, [

Syne every freind made him his band,
Quwill they micht owdir gang or stand,
Nevir ane fute fra him to flee

The whole thing about John Barleycorn and Allane is, of course, the making of Ale, Malt, Meade or Beer and…the personification of the Barley, the Ale and the Harvest in general. I think it might be a lot easier to write a few songs with Allane around!

Planetary Preponderances for the Cancer Moon Cycle 2013

7/17:Uranus Retrograde 12ARIES31 to 8ARIES35 until 11/19/13

Four months to think it over…Uranus bring the element of surprise but during retrograding months, this is a little less pronounced. If you locate these degrees in your natal chart, you may get a deeper insight as to what to investigate that might take four months. Aries doesn’t particular care to do research though; it is rather prone to swashbuckling on the chandelier.

7/17: TRINES – Jupiter/Saturn (Cancer/Scorpio) and Jupiter/Neptune (Cancer/Pisces)

Hold long can YOU hold your breath under water? A rhetorical question since we have all become mer-humanoids. So we can breath underwater but we have also become very slippery. Don’t worry the emotional experiences we are having - are just great research to perhaps know how mermaids and mermen function.

Grand Trine: 7/17-19: Jupiter/Saturn/Neptune – Cancer/Scorpio/Pisces 05 Degrees of each sign

All of the slipperiness is actually a kind of magick! Open to the blessings!

7/20: Mercury Direct- 13CANCER22

Yes, yes and yes. This means it’s over, and you can go soak more beans for tomorrow’s dinner.

8/4: The Bendings: Sun/No.Node/So.Node – Sun: 13 Leo/North Node: 13 Scorpio/South Node: 13 Taurus

The Sun reaches the half way point between the nodes, which is another way of saying we are half way between eclipses. These signs if you notice, are all FIXED signs…the Fire, Water and Earth of it. Air is left out this time, so we might forget to bring our intellect into the process! (I won’t vouch for whether this is good or bad, it’s just an OBSERVATION!) This time frame is good for evaluation of what you’ve been doing since the last eclipses. The eclipse coming is Nov. 3… the ones in the past were those 3 doozies back in April and May…

Bright Blessings, Mary Anna
