The Sabian Symbol for the New Moon Degree-15 Leo
“A Human Soul Seeking Opportunities for Outward Manifestation”

This symbol makes so much sense for this time of year – we are seeing our gardens flourishing, an outward manifestation of our efforts. What shall we manifest for the future, with our talents, passions, interests and efforts? How does our soul align with it all?

The Sabian Symbol for the Full Moon degree - 29 Aquarius
“A Tree Sawed and Felled to Insure Wood for the Winter”

Summer is now entering the beginning of the closing scene of its dramatic seasonal play. How do we prepare for the coming winter while it’s still warm enough for our fingers, hands and tools to prepare? What kinds of tasks can we be focused on right now to prepare for future needs?

The Part of Fortune at the New Moon (in the Montpelier Area) - 6 Capricorn
“A Group of People Outfitting A Large Canoe at the Start of A Journey by Water”

Another image of preparing, and gearing up! What supplies, gear and tools do you need to be gathering? Who do you want to go along with you on your “journey”? Whether a real canoe trip or a metaphorical one (or both!) , anticipating our needs in advance either through research or experience shows caring and deep participation in your group endeavors.

Celtic Tree Ogham – Hazel

For the Leo Cycle - August to September: the Tree is Hazel, also called “Coll”. The Hazel tree represents concentrated, inspired wisdom and knowledge. The hazelnuts are symbols of wisdom, specifically intuitive wisdom. Some historical references suggest that dowsing rods, shepherd’s crooks, magickal wands and staves for self defense are/were made from the Hazel tree branches as it helps to locate things. Great for walking sticks, with honeysuckle entwined around it, it may make you invisible! The wood of the Hazel tree is renowned for being associated with and opening a pathway to creativity, poetry, inspiration, and consequently madness!

The Hazel Moon cycle is a great time to assess what you have learned over the past year. What did you study? What was your focus? What nuts of wisdom have you swallowed? How can you best use your wisdom?

The use of satire is a tool at high levels of teaching and mentoring, which can be destructive if not used wisely. Eating hazelnuts is rumored in some historical accounts as a way to focus the mind just before the use of satire in a story, teaching or discussion. Partaking of hazelnuts is also helpful prior to doing divination work, as they assist in gaining appropriate knowledge and focus of the intuition.

The Gaelic word for wisdom, “Cnocach” and the word for nut “Cno” are similar in sound and is one of the links to Hazel being associated with wisdom. There is an ancient passage concerning the 9 Hazel trees growing by a sacred pool, and the nuts falling into the water to be eaten by the salmon swimming there.

In one version of the story, one particular salmon eats all of the nuts and obtains all of the knowledge, as is suggested by the spots that suspiciously develop on the salmon. This one salmon is then cooked by none other than the heroic Fin Mac Cumhail, who, licking the oils of the fish off of his fingers goes on to become a most wise and famous character. Sounds easy, right?

“The Song of the Wandering Angus” by William Butler Yeats

I went out to the hazel wood,
Because a fire was in my head,
And cut and peeled a hazel wand,
And hooked a berry to a thread;
And when white moths were on the wing,
And moth-like stars were flickering out,
I dropped the berry in the stream,
And caught a little silver trout.

When I had laid it on the floor
I went to blow the fire aflame,
But something rustled on the floor,
And someone called me by my name:
It had become a glimmering girl
With apple blossom in her hair
Who called me by my name and ran
And faded through the brightening air.

Though I am old with wandering
Through hollow lands and hilly lands,
I will find out where she has gone,
And kiss her lips and take her hands;
And walk among long dappled grass,
And pluck til time and times are done
The silver apples of the moon
The Golden apples of the sun.

Planetary Preponderances for the LEO Moon Cycle 2013

8/4: The Bendings: Sun/No.Node/So.Node – 13 Leo/Scorpio/Taurus (Sun@halfway point)
“Disillusioned saviors search the sky, wanting just to show someone the way…”

Even though this date was actually just before the new moon date of August 6, it is important to note as being associated with this particular new moon. It is the half way point between the two eclipses – the upcoming Nov. 3 date and the eclipses back in the spring of April 29, May 9 and May 25. This represents an opportunity for assessment. Where are we in terms of achieving our goals that were set out at the spring eclipses? What do we need to focus on between now and November?

8/6: New Moon in Leo
“If I were the King of the forest...though my tail would lash, I would show compash….”

What is true courage? I was reminded in a recent workshop, (thank you Graham!) that the word courage stems from French for the word for Heart: Coeur. This reminds us that true courage is really about love. It isn’t necessarily about overcoming fear. That happens automatically when we use our heart first.

8/20: Second Full Moon in Aquarius/Blue Moon
“And the mind’s true liberation…”

A second chance this summer to contemplate our “World View”. What is your version of the world? What would you like it to be? How can you initiate steps in your life to put into place the dream you envision for humanity and the planet?

8/21: Jupiter SQUARE Uranus 13Cancer/Aries
“I used to be such a sweet, sweet thing, til they got hold of me…”

If you haven’t used your natal chart so much that it resembles homework that the dog ate, or even if it is shredded and stained at this point, check these degrees and house placements to see what you need to worm your way out of before it sucks you in even further. I once told someone “arrogance is a virtue” and I am arrogant enough to believe it. Sometimes we need to be able to stand in our power and just say “no thank you” and move on. The origin of the word really suggests to: “claim one’s importance”. Try it. You are important. Don’t be shy.

8/21: Jupiter TRINE Chiron 13 Cancer/Pisces
“It’s important to me, that you know you are free, cause I never want to make you change for me...”

Ah. The healing power of water. This is, of course, working together with the Jupiter Square Uranus, the same day. How to navigate these together? The myth of Chiron is really about an abandoned, freakish creature making the most of the situation and thereby shifting the entire worldview of reality. Keep your creativity, your angst and your oddness. Get your freak on.

Change the world already.

Bright Blessings, Mary Anna
