Lunar Insight Moon Musings: Hunting, Fires and Parting Shots

Hunt. Build fires. That’s what we do.
We are hunters. We hunt because we are hungry.
We build fires because we know the cold.

Our hunger gives us confidence and the ability to take calculated risks and train ourselves toward perfection. Our need for fire gives us intent. There is no denying these are basic attributes we all share. Hunting is, perhaps, the one thing we all have in common and also why we war with and murder each other and destroy our environment. Can we turn our urge and demand for the hunt into truth seeking of a more conscious level?

In the depths of the oncoming winter season – what do you seek? What do you hunt?
What is your target, goal or horizon? Sagittarius is a time to feed your inner fire.

Hunting is perhaps the only authentic way to find what we need. What do we need? Our true needs are often diverted, influenced by false urges or just deadened by convenience and patterns that we learn when we are too young to know what is going on. We meet “needs” in ways that are perhaps so different from our ancestors.

Hunting tools: What tools do you choose? What is available to you? What skills do you needs to learn, adjust to, practice, refresh? If you are using archery as your tool, realistically or metaphorically, remember that a well-placed arrow makes one mark in the target and stays there – as a marker of the archer’s effort. Once the shot is taken, it’s over, but another shot can be taken, and so on and so on. There is no reason for fear of missing, as the action can be practiced until satisfaction.

I do not speak in metaphors, but we can if you prefer. When hunting, our goal is to bring something home to eat. We can stray into the idea of hunting for “sport” which is an absurd human behavior. If we go into metaphor, our hunting urge is suppressed by modern activities such as shopping, philosophy and even yes, education. What are the basics that we actually need? What sort of education is the most helpful? I vote for study that has as a basis the understanding and experience of empathy. Can we hunt for more hope, empathy, generosity and ethics? These are important Sagittarius attributes to envision into our daily lives.

During this winter moon cycle that includes the Winter Solstice on Dec. 21 – keep the hunt in mind. Use your intuitive skills to address the hunger you have that your hunting satisfies.

What do you yearn for?

What is your commitment to the search, the hunt, the seeking?

Do you have eyes to see in the darkness, ears to hear in the silence?

When you release your arrow, see your target in your inner eye and hear the satisfying sound of reaching your goal within your heart.

When contemplating Sagittarius and the hunt: Consider also when the hunt is over, when the seeking stops, when contentment and satisfaction arrives, when you can reached your need. Then remember your generosity and deep ability to share. The sharing of resources gained in the hunt provides us with companionship, collective experience and the strength to carry on to the next phase of the year, when our stored energy is needed to persist until spring. Build your inner fires. Stay warm and fed.

Hunting Fairy Poems!

A Fairy Hunt
by Francis Ledwidge, 1877-1917 WWI Veteran
From County Meath, Ireland

Who would hear the fairy horn
Calling all the hounds of Finn
Must be in a lark's nest born
When the moon is very thin.

I who have the gift can hear
Hounds and horn and tally ho,
And the tongue of Bran as clear
As Christmas bells across the snow.

And beside my secret place
Hurries by the fairy fox,
With the moonrise on his face,
Up and down the mossy rocks.

Then the music of a horn
And the flash of scarlet men,
Thick as poppies in the corn
All across the dusky glen.

Oh! the mad delight of chase!
Oh ! the shouting and the cheer !
Many an owl doth leave his place
In the dusty tree to hear.

The Fairies
By William Allingham, Irish Poet 1824 -1889
From Ballyshannon, Donegal

Up the airy mountain,
Down the rushy glen,
We daren’t go a-hunting
For fear of little men;
Wee folk, good folk,
Trooping all together;
Green jacket, red cap,
And white owl’s feather!

Down along the rocky shore
Some make their home,
They live on crispy pancakes
Of yellow tide-foam;
Some in the reeds
Of the black mountain lake,
With frogs for their watch-dogs,
All night awake.

High on the hill-top
The old King sits;
He is now so old and gray
He’s nigh lost his wits.
With a bridge of white mist
Columbkill he crosses,
On his stately journeys
From Slieveleague to Rosses;
Or going up with music
On cold starry nights
To sup with the Queen
Of the gay Northern Lights.

They stole little Bridget
For seven years long;
When she came down again
Her friends were all gone.
They took her lightly back,
Between the night and morrow,
They thought that she was fast asleep,
But she was dead with sorrow.
They have kept her ever since
Deep within the lake,
On a bed of flag-leaves,
Watching till she wake.

By the craggy hill-side,
Through the mosses bare,
They have planted thorn-trees
For pleasure here and there.
If any man so daring
As dig them up in spite,
He shall find their sharpest thorns
In his bed at night.

Up the airy mountain,
Down the rushy glen,
We daren’t go a-hunting
For fear of little men;
Wee folk, good folk,
Trooping all together;
Green jacket, red cap,
And white owl’s feather!
