Blessings to you on Imbolc and the germinating season of the year! May Brigid’s creative fire be kindled bright in our lives and may we all share this life energy through the world and for the life of our planet and universe.
The Lunar Year of the Horse begins on the Aquarian New Moon on Jan. 30. The heavens are filled with horses, they are not just represented by the handsome bottom half of the centaur in Sagittarius, astute archer that he is!
The most well known are the constellations of Pegasus and Equuleus with their own well-known mythologies. These constellations have fixed stars that you can locate in your chart, offering their specific meanings. However, a symbol for the Equine lovers among us is the asteroid – Epona #3838, discovered in 1986, an astrological symbol for Goddess Epona.
Epona translates as “The Divine Mare” – a Gaulish/Celtic Goddess that held her power into the Roman Empire, the only deity that held her own original name and aspects. She is portrayed with two or four horses and baskets of fruit in many images. She is often portrayed riding upon a horse or pony. She is regarded to this day as a powerful female deity – ruling over the fertility of herds of horses, the journeys they take us on, our concepts of mobility and herd leadership.
Most important of all, she acts as a shamanistic psycho pomp, escorting us between realms. Hence, she is a Key Keeper, for entering portals and realms during her journeys. She is also a Giver of Names. These aspects also outline her level of authority and leadership.
A study of equine behavior, especially herds of horses, give us a deep and relevant understanding of the importance of the Goddess Epona’s role in the ancient world and today as well. The Divine Mare was also the lead mare – guiding her herd. In the case of the Goddess Epona, we are all part of her herd.
So a good questions for this year center around our concepts of the collective nature of communities…who are your herd mates? And - the big question: are you a leader or a herd member? Do you have both roles? To whom do you give your trust- someone that you would follow without question? Do you hold that role of leadership for others? If you are a leader, what are your systems that guide you and what are your signals of danger, sources of knowledge and gestures of knowing? What are you experiences regarding “being in charge”, being “in control”, or “having trust” in someone else?
In our culture, the underlying psychology of individualism still holds sway – in fact, it seems we have mixed messages about this rugged individualism and the community aspects of life. Still, we all face the same concerns, “belonging” is important for us, even though we are a hunter species – classified not only by our behaviors, but by sheer nature of having our eyes in the front of our heads, unlike “prey” species, who have eyes on the sides of their heads.
The placement of Epona right now, at the start of the Year of the Horse, the current New Moon in Aquarius is interesting. She is traveling alongside of the asteroid Pallas Athena and escorts us into the new year with a direct opposition to Chiron/Juno, forming one corner of the unique “mystic rectangle” aspect with the other corners held by Pluto and Jupiter.
The exactness of the Mystic Rectangle was on Jan. 27 and holds relevance until Feb. 3 - with an exact conjunction of Epona and Pallas Athena on February 5. A helpful aspect, the mystic rectangle helps us to use intuition and insight in practical ways.
By adding Epona’s and Pallas Athena’s elements into the mix of Jupiter, Uranus and Pluto, we can find a deeper inspiration from a Goddess point of view, rather than focusing only on the planetary aspects between these 3 mythologies.
Epona’s position in Virgo at the start of the Year of the Horse suggests taking a closer look – a chance to analyze details – similar to what horses do constantly. They are on constant alert for mutable details, things that change in their environment, sounds, smells, movement. The sign of Virgo suggests our daily environment, how we experience our environment, and the choices we make about creating our environment. This concept includes the people we accept into our communities –our herd. It’s a great year to do some re-organizing at many levels of our environment, not just in our personal environments but also for the entire ecosystem. I daresay or predict that Epona may force us to follow her lead this year. She is a Goddess after all and perhaps we would do well to follow her lead.
During this, the year of the Horse, Epona travels from mid Virgo backward to mid-Gemini. She covers only part of the chart’s circle. She does a very interesting retrograde!
Her orbit is 674 Earth days to travel around the sun. This asteroid is one of a group of asteroids known as Mercury Grazers and Near Earth Objects, crossing the orbits of Earth and Mercury.*
The wind of heaven is that which blows between a horse’s ears. -- Arabian Proverb
Planetary Preponderances for the AQUARIUS 2014 Moon Cycle:
Jan. 30 Year of the (Wood Element) Horse begins at the New Moon
Where are you going? I‘ll go with you. Hey, what are you doing? Come over here with me. Let’s be friends, stick together. We’ll be safer that way. Be ready to run.
Jan 31: JupiterRX Oppose Pluto 12°17”CAN/CAP
This is the second of three oppositions between Jupiter and Pluto, this one being the Jupiter RX position. The first was in August 2013; the third will be in April 2014. Plainly put: what powers do we feel justified in abusing, or can we use some restraint, find tolerance, patience and an appropriate sense of timing? Don’t throw your “baby out with the bathwater” as the old non-PC saying goes.
Jan. 31 Venus DIRECT @ 13 and 33
Retrograding since 12/12/13 (13 and 33) , one of the 5 point star arms that Venus makes during the 8 year cycle…reconnect with the past, your values, friends, lovers - a chance to affirm, re-affirm and reflect. “Exit Shadow” in effect until March 3rd, giving us a chance to “re-cover” from all that contact with old friends and honor how far we’ve all grown since “the old days”.
