On March 1, 1692, the Salem Witch hunt began. Neptune was transiting Pisces then too. While witchcraft was considered much differently than it is now in some places, the trials were perhaps really motivated by money, as most witch hunts were and probably still are. However, the human inability to resist group “hysteria” is perhaps the vehicle that propelled the event.
This kind of thinking, or lack of thinking - which is basically “scapegoating” - is somehow a mechanism that comes up again and again and again in human history. There are other instances through the history when Neptune transited Pisces that demonstrate the confusing nature of mass hysteria and crowd sourcing of a desired version of the truth. One individual or a named group will suffer the consequences of the shortcomings and visions of utopia for all. May we somehow save ourselves and be ever reminded of this trigger-happy tendency as it unfolds yet again in Ukraine and Arizona, just to name two current situations.
Pisces symbolizes the life of the soul, visions, dreams, and illusions and a connection to the waters of our emotions and our earliest pre-natal memories. Pisces energies assist us in the need to manifest emotions in our physical bodies and to rest within the endless pre-natal waters and solutions of the great mother. Pisces is also how we connect with the emotional experiences of those around us – our psychic and empathic bonding. In our current culture, there is much that keeps us from experiencing this at the most true and authentic level.
Today, our ability to experience trance, ecstasy, enchantment and spiritual immersion is often channeled through various acceptable methods and techniques, requiring gurus, teachers and experts. We must remember that, while under the Pisces influence, we are indeed mermaids and mermen, living dual lives above and below sea level.
This year, as the Pisces moon cycle emerges, following the Tropical standard of astrology, Neptune is at 6 degrees of Pisces, just a few degrees from the position of the Sun and Moon at the beginning of their cycle. The human body part that is linked to this degree is the left cuboid bone – a cubed shaped bone in the foot that connects the foot to the ankle and supplies stability to the foot as well as articulation to the toes. The left side of the body suggests an intuitive and creative process. Dancing is certainly enabled by this bone!
Chiron – one of our most well known Equin-esque mentors – at 14 degrees of Pisces, is also very close to the new moon degree, reminding us of the extreme function that is experienced and the sacrifices that occur - in this most esteemed of mentoring role models. Looking at this in an experiential way, and a somatic way – what experiences do we take on when we help others? Where does the karma start to shift? How do we choose those we are willing to help, mentor or teach? How do they choose us? How are we tied together like the sign of the two fish in the glyph for Pisces? What is the vision of love and spirit that we send out that connects us?
Ultimately, our deepest affirmations and visions pull people together in a symbiotic cherishing of mutual existence, need and pleasure. This is the channel where we connect and experience depth. This deep empathic sea holds us all. Saturn’s trine with Pluto at the new moon reminds us that we can be catalysts for others and assist them in dealing with their own pain, trauma and transitions.
Pisces rules over the feet on our bodies (although fish don’t have feet but rather fins, that closely resemble feet) . I recall last year for the Pisces New Moon cycle, I wrote about the Red Lipped Bat Fish, who have fins that appear to be foot-like. We can remember that we are mermaids and mermen, emerged from the sea – never lost and always able to find our way. Now we stand; we connect with our feet. We are learning that even to have our feet touching the earth is a forgotten experience and now this re-emerges as a new kind of therapy.
This year, I will closely follow the Goddess asteroid Epona – The Divine Mare - on her path through the heavens each month, in honor of the Year of the Horse. At the Pisces New moon, Epona in Leo is trined with Uranus in Aries, suggesting a unique type of charismatic situation. On the morning of March 20, the Spring Equinox, as Epona in Cancer squares with Uranus in Aries, discover and nurture a sense of assertive change. On March 21st, the next day, Epona conjuncts Jupiter in Cancer, and opposes Pluto in Capricorn – so accept and/or offer the gift of nurturance and invite a responsible transformation. The symbol of the Goddess Epona invites conscious leadership and initiative. We can all benefit by a more conscious awareness of how leadership and initiative works in our individual lives and our collective life. How conscious are we of how we give someone the reins of power?
Planetary Preponderances for the PISCES 2014 Moon Cycle:
March 1: Mars RX until 5/19 – 27LIBRA32 to 9°2”
Mars in Libra – reread The Art of War. Avoid war, but recognize the roots of it in our individual and collective nature. Expect the scales to tilt before they come to a balancing.
March 2: Saturn RX til7/20 – 23Scorpio19 to 16°39”
Renew loyalties, trusted relationships and teachers, mentors, leaders
March 6: Jupiter Direct -10 CANCER 27
Bring care and nurturing to your direct family and all species of families on Earth.
March 16: Full Virgo Moon
Manifested health brings soul into body.
March 20: Spring Equinox/sun enters Aries
A little green goes a long way! Hail the beauty of spring!
March 21: Epona conjunct Jupiter 11°Cancer /oppose Pluto 11° Capricorn
Epona carries the keys of nurturance and responsibility and travels into transformational realms.
