At the dark moon, just before the new moon, quiet energy simmers just below the busy mind. Rest there. Search there, in the darkness and silence. Invite visions with inner eyes. No texting, tweeting, liking, or sharing - but hold your community in your heart with the unity and the passion of a rebel’s yell. This dark moon time releases the entire zodiac year and ushers in the beginning of the next run.
In this monthly darkness, we can release – this month it is from March 27 through the new moon on March 30, resolve and release is a clearing of the Aquarius, Pisces and Aries pockets. The signs of Aquarius and Pisces are of course, the ending of the entire zodiac – and the first 10 degrees of ARIES begins the cycle again. It is a time to gently release difficult activities, thoughts and emotions that are represented there …here are just a few correlating words for your left brain hemisphere to recognize:
AQUARIUS: emotional detachment, negligence, disorganization
PISCES: victimization, confusion, self-destructive and delusional behaviors
ARIES: recklessness, aggression, violence, irresponsibility.
Then, on MARCH 30th, the new cycle begins. Rest has been taken, so a fresh start may “see-m” easy. The 10th degree of ARIES (9°ARIES59’) marks the beginning of the cycle this year. One third of the way into the sign of ARIES, this degree is linked to the eyeball itself! What new horizons can be seen through that eye? Where do you “set your sights”? Upon what do you set your vision?
When I was a young girl, we would visit my great auntie in Tennessee during our spring school vacations. The warm and fragrant southern air was refreshing after cold New England winters. My Aunt Lily was a tall and lanky sort of woman who always dressed in black. The inside of her refrigerator would glow in amber tones from the long neck beer bottles that filled each shelf. Squirrels and chipmunks ran along the open windows of her long kitchen windowsills above the extended soapstone sink area and would eagerly greet us in the morning sun. As was a custom in our family, she would invite me to stand quietly there and look out into the backyard trees and observe the movement of the birds. We followed them with our eyes for a few moments and then sat at the table to talk over the upcoming day based on what we saw the birds do.
I loved her dearly and we would talk long into the night. She had many auguries that she taught me, including some silly ones. As I grew older and she suspected I was getting “interested in boys”, she instructed me to assign a boy’s name to each corner of the ceiling in the room. The corner you looked at first when you woke up would be the boy you “might consider suitable for marriage”. The emphasis in her divinations was always on free will and choice oriented design.
At the Crescent phase on April 3, the promising moon twirls in a square dance with Athena and Venus and Saturn. The movement forward is supported by recognizing collective values, compassionate wisdom and intense determination.
On April 5, Luna and Epona meet in Gemini under a tall tree to talk with three fledglings in a nest, high up in the tree. It is a brief council, a sharing of information concerning the struggle of the tender new life of spring.
The First Quarter phase on April 7, the action moon supports as things begin to line up for the Grand Cross later in the month, and moves past Jupiter in Cancer, sort of like Little Red Riding Hood bringing those muffins to Grandma before realizing something’s different about this visit. Difficult secrets and situations may be easier to deal with if we just look them in the face and be honest about what we see.
April 11 is Gibbous phase in Virgo, detailing a finalizing of the developing architecture before the full moon. Across from Venus and Neptune in Pisces, adding in artful touches in design, loving compassion and the deep human touch of love, creative expression and even whimsy puts the finishing touch on things that will be unveiled at the Full Moon/Lunar Eclipse…
April 15 the flowering Libra Full Moon swings out to form a total lunar eclipse. The Goddess Asteroids stand with Vesta and Ceres standing with the moon in Libra, Juno with the Sun in Aries and Pallas Athena standing a trine/sextile guard in Leo. Stand in sacred focus, nurturance, partnering support and protection as this eclipse ushers in Persephone’s return to a long awaited and anxious middle world, in need of her youthful and inspired energy. This is more than an entourage. It is a ceremony to provide and award stature to the magnificent Goddesses and how they suggest and support our awareness as we move with commitment and consciousness toward sustainability, co-creation with nature, acceptance of empathy and intuition and appropriate political wisdom.
The remaining phases Disseminating, Last Quarter and Balsamic can sometimes feel anticlimactic after such an eclipse. But wait, there IS more. The long awaited Grand Cross, reputed globally for some months and years is “upon us”. The way it has been described is as if we are upon the cross ourselves. Perhaps we are. I suggest it is a chance to totally revamp our concepts about these planetary correlations. Yes, it may present some suffering, some distinct difficulties. But life on this planet has survived many changes and mutable situations.
On April 23rd /24th Uranus, Jupiter, Mars and Pluto hold their unique and long awaited meeting in Grand Cross/Square. The signs involved are Aries, Libra, Cancer and Capricorn – those powerful signs of Cardinal modalities. Not to get all gendered about it, but the classical meanings of these planets are of a certain kind of masculine persuasion that is etched deeply into our culture. We can benefit by learning to recognize configurations like this one that relate to Goddess energy need to come into our consciousness. The Goddesses present at this month’s full moon are a great example (see above ) .
The emphasis of the Cardinal modality is also important – as well as how we view this kind of energy. The origins of the word “cardinal” comes from “cardo” – a pivot, a socket or a hinge. So going back to this original meaning of cardinal energy is perhaps a wise thing to consider at this grand cross.
What is the pivoting point, what is turning it the socket, or opening and closing like a hinge to allow a doorway or window to open? Occurring between the Lunar Eclipse at the full moon and the upcoming New Moon on April 29, it offers an opportunity to accept major shifts in the world and our personal lives.
