We are pleased to announce that VA agreed today to add the Wiccan emblem of belief to its approved list. In fact, the VA website has already been updated to include the Pentacle: http://www.cem.va.gov/cem/hm/hmemb.asp. This comes as the close of a broad coalition of individuals and organizations that included Circle Sanctuary, Isis Invicta, the Correllian Nativist Church and the Aquarian Tabernacle Church (who began the process over nine years ago).
In addition to adding the Pentacle to the VA's approved list, VA agreed to grant the individual requests (and the other pending individual requests) for specific headstones/markers.
The agreement dated April 20, 2007 states:
"Within 14 days from the execution of this Stipulation, VA will provide a headstone, marker, or memorial plaque (of a type suitable for placement in the relevant cemetery) inscribed with a Pentacle for Sgt. Patrick Stewart, PFC Jerome Birnbaum, PFC James Price, Abraham and Rosemary Kooiman and any other eligible individuals who have submitted complete applications for Pentacle-inscribed headstones, markers, or memorial plaques, and who have been identified before the execution of this Stipulation. VA will coordinate with the Department of the Army, which controls Arlington National Cemetery, to promptly order headstones, markers, or memorial plaques inscribed with a Pentacle for Abraham and Rosemary Kooiman and for any other eligible individuals who have submitted complete applications for Pentacle-inscribed headstones, markers, or memorial plaques, and who have been identified before the execution of this Stipulation."
We here at the Aquarian Tabernacle Church of Wicca want also to acknowledge everyone, known to us or not, who has ever fired a shot in this long, drawn out battle over the last nine years, especially our own Scott Stearns (USN) who breathed new life into this struggle when it had reached its low point. They all deserve acknowledgment as the behind-the-scenes heavy lifters who paved smooth the road to success. So very many people wrote their legislators, senators and representatives, letters-to-the-editor and exerted subtle but persistent pressure in so very many ways we can never list. We can even thank our president for his offhanded anti-Wiccan remark some years ago in Texas, which helped us all win. When we all work together in a coordinated effort, we CAN move mountains!
Who says Wiccans can't "create our own reality?"
