Naming Ceremony

Hi Fritz,

"Below is the ceremony we wrote for Deainira (known as Daya), the bracelet mentioned was a charm bracelet with a silver charm for each 'gift' we gave her. We held the naming/blessing in a local park which had a waterfall behind us and the day was gorgeous. We hope you like this example of how simple it can be and many of our guests were not pagan but found it very fascinating and said it felt very peaceful and welcoming to them".

"We held the naming in a local park named Fremont Park in South Australia at the end of summer. There is a beautiful waterfall just behind where we were and as you can see from the photo lots of lush grass and birds. The people in the picture are Lea (HP) Helen (Mum), Brett (Dad) Eleanor (big sister - 6) and Deianira who was 14 months old at the time".

Naming Ceremony
by Helen

Everyone stands in circle, loosely formed. Mum, Dad, Elly and Daya are in the centre with HPS. HPS welcomes guests to the circle,

'We have formed this circle of perfect and love and perfect trust for the rite of Deianira's Pagan Naming.'

then smudges Daya with Frank & Myrrh and asks for blessings of the God and Goddess upon Deianira (while smudging)

'I call upon the Goddess and God, the sacred Ether and all the sacred elements of the Universe to be present in this circle to bless this child'.

'In the presence of our Goddess and God we ask that you bestow your blessings upon Deianira, child of Brett and Helen, Sister to Eleanor. Guide her, guard her and keep her from harm.' Blessed Be.

then to the quarters beginning in the East - HPS may take Deianira and face her to the quarters,

'Guardians of the East - spirits of the Earth, we ask that you bestow your blessings of grounding and healing upon Deianira, child of Brett and Helen, sister of Eleanor. Guide her, guard her and keep her from harm.' Blessed Be.

'Guardians of North - spirits of Fire, we ask that you bestow your blessings of transformation - energy for life's challenges upon Deianira, child of Brett and Helen, sister of Eleanor. Guide her, guard her and keep her from harm.' Blessed Be.

'Guardians of the West, spirits of the Water, we ask that you bestow your blessings of spirituality and emotional strength upon Deianira, child of Brett and Helen, sister of Eleanor. Guide her, guard her and keep her from harm.' Blessed Be.

'Guardians of the South - spirits of the Air, we ask that you bestow your blessings of wisdom and intuitiveness upon Deianira, child of Brett and Helen, sister of Eleanor. Guide her, guard her and keep her from harm.' Blessed Be.

Whilst Mum holds Deianira the HPS takes the bracelet and holds each charm showing it to the child (alternatively Dad my hold the bracelet) while HPS says the following

Here I give you this Sun, symbol of the God, that you will always remember him and the great love he has for you. Blessed Be.

Here I give you this Moon, symbol of the Goddess, that you will always remember Her and the great love She has for you. Blessed Be. Here we give you this apple, symbol of the earth, that you may always know its bounty. May you never hunger. Blessed Be.

Here we give you this bird, symbol of the air, that you may always be free and refreshed by the life force of air. Blessed Be.

Here we give you this flame, symbol of fire, that you may always have its guiding light and warmth. Blessed Be

Here we give you this goblet, symbol of water, that you may always be able to find the life blood water. May you never thirst. Blessed Be.

Here we give you this shell, gift of the eternal sea, a symbol of eternal life. Blessed Be.

Here I give you a seed from a tree, the acorn, that you may understand how great things grow from small beginnings, that you may know and love the trees, learn their wisdom and that you may become as strong and true as a tree. Blessed Be.

the bracelet is then handed to Deianira or placed on her wrist.

    Child's Blessing

Upon this Pagan Naming Rite Abundant wishes in rainbow light That peace, love and wisdom grow Within this precious child for her to know Hold her name "Deianira" sacred and dear May security and healing be with her through the years Nature, scent her life with sweet wonder And energies of light ever surround her May the warmth of The Sun give her strength to achieve And insight from the enchanting Moon to see All sacred elements of water, air, earth and fire Guide her through life's lessons to her power In trust, truth and love may she believe By the sacredness of Nature, So Mote It Be

Deianira is then presented to the circle for a kiss/greeting from all present.

All guests are invited to then write their own wish for her in the book of wishes and to have something to eat and drink.

We thank the sacred elements, the sacred Ether and the God and Goddess for being present in our circle of perfect love and perfect trust. We send you forth with our love, respect and gratitude. Blessed Be.

Our love respect and gratitude to Deianira, Helen, Brett, Eleanor and everyone gathered in this circle. Blessed Be.

Deianira's Pagan Naming Rite is now complete.

So It Is, So Be It, So Mote It Be.

May the circle be open but unbroken May the peace of The Goddess Be ever in our hearts Merry Meet and Merry Part and Merry Meet again. Blessed Be.

I ask you all now to give her your own blessings and congratulations as Helen and Brett take Deianira around the circle. Blessed Be.

Additional Credits: The inspiration for the ceremony came from a book called 'The Witches of Oz' by Matthew and Julia Philips, the Childs Blessing by Lea Rebane-Baum and the words for the rest were a collaboration by Lea and Helen.
