Cornish Witchcraft

Category: Regional

Website Profile: Ros An Bucca is a working initiatory Circle or Lodge of the Traditional Craft based in West Cornwall, England. The working way of the Circle is influenced to some extent by an older and intensely private and ‘closed’ Traditionalist Penwith Coven from which Ros An Bucca was in part born (see ‘about’) . In particular the Traditional Cornish elements of practice from the ‘old coven’ have been carried over, cherished, nurtured, grown and developed to form the core practice and Tradition of Ros An Bucca. The other lineages and influences of the ‘old coven’, particularly those from Robert Cochrane/Roy Bowers and perhaps Ruth Wynn-Owen may have coloured some aspects of Ros An Bucca’s ritual method, always, however, it is the ever living and evolving Traditionalist Craft, the Cornish ‘Wise-Craft’ and Cunning Way that form the core of practice and Tradition.

The ‘robed’ rites of Ros An Bucca are conducted preferably out of doors at various places of power within the west Cornish landscape. The site chosen will always depend upon the nature of the work to be done. Our working methods are employed partly to induce and strengthen the states of mind useful to the working of magic, and to ‘stir up’ or ‘gather in’ the powers known to us as ‘sprowl’ and the ‘red serpent’. As well as the powers of land and sky, the ancestors and other spirit forces are invoked into the circle and worked with, as well as the planetary virtues pertinent to the work in hand. Such methods used involve silent or muttered conjurations whilst circling the ‘hood-fire’. The states of mind desirable to the Cornish Witch whilst working, better enable one to perceive the forces raised and indeed to direct them to the target of the work.

The working and spirit filled items of the Cornish Craft are, where possible, lovingly created by the Crafter’s own hand, preferably using components gathered from the land.

The practice of Witchcraft and Cunning in Cornwall was and is traditionally a Craft of service, that of Wise Woman and Cunning Man, and, like other services, a trade. Ros An Bucca works for the continuation of this tradition. As a ‘Cunning Lodge’ its Fellows work to perfect their skills in various traditional areas of the ‘trade’, be it the making of charms, magical powders and ointments, the many ways of divining answers or the whereabouts of things lost, the healing of people and animals via ‘hands on’ methods or sending forth the spirit in ‘absent magic’ or indeed the work of spellcrafting. The ‘novice’ or ‘prentice’ of the lodge is guided to discover what their particular skills of the trade may be and these are to be nurtured.
