Students and Scholars of Alternative Religions

Category: Networking

Website Profile: A resource page for scholars/practitioners in Virginia and the greater Southeast region interested in the academic study of New Religious Movements, Paganism, Ritual Studies, History of Magic, Freemasonry and Western Esotericism, and the like. Students and Scholars of Alternative Religions (SSAR) is a "news" page primarily focused on keeping up with new publications, conferences, articles, study programs, and active collegiate student groups. There's been a lot of exciting growth in these fields during the past couple decades, with a heavy influence from practitioners. Unfortunately, much of this can be hard to access outside of the academic institutions - publications tend to be expensive, and conferences are usually overseas or on the West Coast. Thus, SSAR's goal is to help bring the information from these academic fields into the general public in Virginia and neighboring states via presentations, book reviews and discussions, and research assistance. It is my hope that we can work on getting some regional symposiums/conferences going in the near future.
SSAR is dedicated to promoting excellence in the research and study of alternative and new religious movements, their theory, philosophy, and practices, and the historical cultural, spiritual, and intellectual traditions related to their development. Our primary focus is to increase the opportunities for students in the Southeastern United States to participate in the growing academic disciplines serving these areas of study, and to make the information from these fields more accessible to practitioners outside of the Academy.
