MEDICINAL HERBS FROM ANTIQUITY TO THE PRESENT : History, Ethnography,

Event Details: HERBS are an integral part of Bulgaria’s past and present: its lands are rich in many different kinds of medicinal plants (750 species are currently registered) which have been used throughout history, from ancient times to the present*, in a great variety of contexts. The aim of this project is to acquaint the participant – through theoretical lectures, workshops on location, demonstrations and re-enactments by specialists – with the many types of herbs used by the people having populated the lands of modern Bulgaria – from the ancient Thracian tribes, the Byzantines, and the medieval Slavic tribes, to the modern Bulgarians –, with the way they were used, and the manner in which they are still employed today. Activities also include searching for and gathering of herbs under the guidance of specialists, as well as meetings with people who still employ the rare skills of preparing herbal products for home use.
* the country's yearly export of medicinal herbs is measured in the tens of tons
**The participation fee includes full board accommodations and all of the activities listed below (lectures, documentation, workshop material, site-visiting, re-enactments, etc.) , except for optional recreational activities. Transportation fees related to arrival to the site of the project and to departure from the site of the project after its completion (airplane and/or bus and/or train tickets) are not included in the participation fee and are the responsibility of the participant.
Event Location: Tourist Complex "Byalo Kamane" in Starosel
Event TIME Details: During July 2013
Directions: Starosel is a village in central Bulgaria, part of Hisarya municipality, Plovdiv Province. It lies at the foot of the Sredna Gora mountain range and the Pyasachnik River crosses it. Starosel is mainly known for its abundance of ancient Neolithic and Thracian sites, with finds dating as far back as the 5-6 millennium BC. The village was in Antiquity an important and wealthy Thracian city in the 5th century BC, as evidenced by the excavations in the 20th century. The largest underground temple in the Balkans is found under the Chetinyova Mogila (tumulus) , along with a mausoleum. The temple as well as nearby Thracian king's residence under Mount Kozi Gramadi were likely built during the reign of Amatokos II (359-351 BC) .
