The Zodiac - A presentation by Richard Hall
Long, long ago people gave names to the stars and began ordering them into groups which we call constellations. Some of these star and constellation names date back to the very dawn of civilization. These names had meaning and behind each is a story. To those who can read it, the night sky is a picture book of stories from antiquity. Here are the tales of the gods, heroes and mighty events. These stories are a window into the past that give us insight to the beliefs of our ancestors. Among the most ancient and significant constellations are those of the Zodiac. In this presentation we explore the historical facts, myths and legends of the Zodiac which formed a cornerstone to the rise of civilization and world religions.
Richard Hall immigrated to New Zealand from England in 1973 and has been involved in astronomy and adult education for more than 30 years. He was Senior Public Programmes Officer at the Carter Observatory, the National Observatory in Wellington for many years where he produced planetarium shows and lecture courses. Richard was leader of a team of enthusiasts that designed and built Stonehenge Aotearoa, which was opened to the public in 2005. He is a past president of the Wellington and Phoenix Astronomical Societies, and is currently a Royal Society Communicator and a member of the Astronomy Standing Committee of The Royal Society. Richard is author of the best seller How to Gaze at the Southern Stars and co-author (with Kay Leather) of Work of the Gods. An inspirational public speaker, Richard lectures on a wide range of astronomical subjects.
