CAYA Samhain and Dumb Supper

Event Details: The Festival of Death & Wisdom (Samhain) Sat. Oct. 27, 2012 7 PM doors open for potluck Dumb Supper Doors lock at 8:15 PM for ritual BFUU Main Hall 1924 Cedar (at Bonita) Berkeley, CA
Welcome, one and all, to Come As You Are Coven's annual celebration of those who have passed through the veil between life and death. We gather in our customary fashion at 7 PM to share in a silent meal as the spirits of the dead throng thickly among us, whispering their messages in the quiet inner landscape. Please bring a potluck dish to share, clearly labelled, or else your own brown-bag meal to enjoy in sacred space. During the Dumb Supper, you will be invited to write the names of your honored dead on sheets of paper at your table as you contemplate them. These names will then be read aloud during the Ancestral Invocation in the ritual to follow.
At 8 PM, we will gather our plates and tables aside, and prepare for ritual. Our Festival of Death & Wisdom is the most theatrical of our annual Wheel of Rites, and in years past, CAYA has embraced various themes to explore in this celebration. Last year we examined political unrest and revolution via archetypes such as the Ten of Swords, the Four Horsewomen of the Apocalypse, and the Void. The year before, we offered a rite that felt and sounded like a New Orleans jazz funeral, attended by Marie Laveau and Baron Samedi.
This year, in keeping with the messages that many of us have been receiving from beyond the grave in our meditations, we have chosen to focus entirely on Ancestors of historical importance whose lives and actions changed the world. Our theme this year is "Mothers of the New Time, Fathers of Change, Children of Promise." Enheduanna: the priestess-scribe-hand of Inanna, Galileo Galilei: scientist and accused heretic, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir: radical philosophers and lifelong lovers, and many others, will offer messages and activities related to rising from the ashes of pain, struggle, and suffering, and transforming the world with our own brave hearts and hands.
We will culminate our ritual with a Spiral Dance, followed by the crowning of our Winter Court, dessert and socializing.
Please join us for the entire evening, or else show up at 8 for ritual. Doors are locked at 8:15. Please feel free to bring photos of Ancestors and items to place on the altar. Feel free to wear whatever you wish, but we especially encourage that you wear black, wear a mask, or dress in rags to symbolize detachment from worldly concerns. All ability levels welcome, and there will be folks to help you if needed. While we cannot guarantee an entirely-scent-free environment, there will not be any incense used in this ritual. Please exercise cautious discernment if planning to bring children under the age of 5, as this ritual might be frightening or overwhelming for sensitive little ones.
All hail the Ancestors, whose bones become the stones that make up our paths, and whose life stories are maps as we navigate these rocky roads of change!
We are Mothers of the New Time and Fathers of Change. We are Children of Promise: the hope of our age. We are Lovers of courage, Warriors of Earth, Seekers on the journey of life, death and rebirth!
