Christian images of the Virgin Mary are numerous and adaptable to historical periods and cultures in unlimited variations. None are as enigmatic, however, as the images called "Black Madonnas" or "Black Virgins" that first appeared in southwestern Europe in the late 9th century. The Church of Rome has never offered a cogent explanation for her color, leaving the field of inquiry wide open to hypothetical explanations ranging from soil and soot accumulated over centuries to the iconographic representation of the divine feminine mysteries at the crux of Eastern and Western mysticism. In this discussion we’ll narrow the focus to consider the customs and folklore of the Pyrenees, the mountains which separate France and Spain, to uncover the historic and pre-Christian folkloric roots of the Black Madonna cult and its ties to witchcraft. For those who feel they know who the Black Madonna is and what she represents: there are many explanations! Here is another avenue to consider that you may find compelling.
