Event Details: The Paralounge Drum Gathering! A drum circle family re-union. The Paralounge Drum Gathering is an event that creates an environment specifically to promote community structure through rhythmic expression. Since July of 2002, the Paralounge Drum Gathering, at the Cerveny Conference Center, has served as a special place for drum circle enthusiast. Twice a year artist and musicians of indigenous instruments gather to become a part of a collective of musical expression. This form of expression has been celebrated by every culture on the planet. Each culture has a unique way of expressing themselves through rhythm and dance. Native Americans have sacred drumming ceremonies. According to Native American tradition, the drum is much more than rawhide and wood. It is a living being, a precious member of the family. African tribes have many different kinds of drums and many of them relate to specific functions, such as, harvest celebrations and rituals for manhood. Oriental cultures and European cultures have many ways to express themselves with percussion. Each culture uses percussion for musical expression, communication, and spiritual healing.
The Paralounge Drum Gathering explores the various cultures through the instruments they created. The most dominant drum in the drum circle is the African Djembe. The Egyptian Doumbek is another prominent sound you may hear. You may recognize the thunder of the Native American Powwow drum or the large African Djun Djun. You may see the Celtic Balron or dance to the Afro-Caribbean Conga. If you hear something you can not identify, you may be listening to the hum of the Australian Didgeridoo.
Each of these exotic instruments tells us about the culture that created them. And during each event we schedule workshops that educate participants with technical aspects of different instruments. You can learn how to play these exotic instruments and sometimes you may even learn how to build it! Through the exploration of these indigenous instruments we learn about our ancestors. We learn about the music they created and the importance the instrument held in their society. Experience a world of rhythm! Saturday has a full schedule for everybody in the family. Learn about the exotic sounds of the Australian Didgeridoo. Participate in Facilitated drum circles. All the creative energy aroused by good fellowship and community interaction is collectively expressed in beautiful music. Saturday night brings the full meaning to the word Paralounge. Para’- ( to go beyond ) and Lounge – ( to sit or move in a relaxing way ) There are moments when you are drumming when you move beyond the concentration and beyond the relaxation. Those are the moments compared to meditation. That is the place where you explore, heal, and evolve on the inside.
