It Was Always Burning: In Our Hearts and In Our Hearths
Imbolc 2013
Gathering at 7:30pm with the ritual beginning at 8:00pm

The name Imbolc refers to ewe’s milk. It was at this time of year that the sheep would begin lactating to feed the newly born lambs. This holiday is about birth. The earth is waking up from winter and flowers are starting to bloom as the snow melts. It is the beginning of the time of the goddess in her maiden form.
The main deity celebrated during Imbolc is the Celtic maiden goddess Brigid; also known as Brighid, Brigit, Bride, and Breed. Attributes of the goddess Brigid can be found in Saint Brigit of Ireland, whose feast day is February 1st.
In Irish mythology, Brigid is the daughter of The Dagda and a member of the Tuatha Dé Danann. She is the patroness of poetry, metalworking, and healing. These seemingly disparate activities caused he to be sometimes referenced as the Triple Brigid.
In Scottish lore, the Cailleach, an ancient Crone goddess, takes a sacred bath on Imbloc. As she bathes in the water the hideous Cailleach transforms the beautiful Maiden goddess: Bride.
Another legend named February 2nd as the day the Cailleach went to gather firewood. If the day was sunny, it meant that the Cailleach needed the light to gather plentiful firewood for the cold weeks ahead. If the day was cloudy, the Cailleach did not need the sunlight by which to see because the upcoming weather would be mild. It is from this story that the American holiday of Groundhog's Day may have originated.
The holiday is also know as Candlemas. As part of the festivities candles are lit to celebrate the sun's increasing power and spring's imminent return.
