Ancient Incense Rituals from Sunny Lands
Event Details: The offering of aromatic plants was part of the ritual sacrifice and celebration in many of the world's ancient cultures. Often lavish amounts of precious and exotic materials were employed by those creating incense for use in temples, these formulas were highly valued, sometimes above gold. We will explore the specific plants, rituals and scents of several regions and discuss how these same customs are still relevant for us today. You will take home at least one sample of sample of incense each night.
June 16 - Greece and Crete
June 23 - Israel and Arabia
June 30 - Central and South America
July 7 - India
July 14 - Egypt and Mesopotamia
Because we will be experiencing different incenses through smelling them and burning them, people with allergies and /or sensitivities to smoke should speak to the presenter regarding any concerns they may have.
Event Location: Lap of the Goddess Office in Somerville
Event TIME Details: 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Directions: Take the Red Line to the Porter Square T stop, once outside cross to the right side of Massachusetts Ave.; you will see a Dunkin Donuts, walk past it. Two blocks down is a dark brown brick building with a Bob Slate's Stationers, we are on the lower level, if you reach the light at Beech street you have gone too far.
Porter Square is about half way between Harvard Square and Route 16 (Alewife Parkway) , there is metered parking on Mass. Ave., and excellent public transportation: you can park at Alewife and take the Red Line 2 stops to Porter Square. Several bus lines run to Porter Sq. and the Fitchburg Commuter Rail runs through Porter Sq. from North Station to and from points west.
