Introduction to Mythology

6:00 PM

UU Church of Haverhill

16 Ashland Street, Haverhill, MA

Mythology is the study ancient stories that have been handed down from generation to generation in a certain culture. HISTORY can tell you facts about a people, but MYTHOLOGY shows you the personality, their beliefs, fears, and hopes.

It has been said “One people’s Religion becomes the next people’s Mythology”. Myths began as religious stories, and many of them prominently feature gods and

goddesses. While society as a whole may overlook their spiritual significance, there is much we can still learn about ourselves through this study.

As you read myths from other cultures, it also causes you to think of your own culture. What stories are we leaving behind for generations to come? What do we value?

What mark are we leaving on an ever-changing world?

Class begins at 6PM with Open Circle starting at 7:30PM

Thursday, August 9th, 2012, 7:00 PM

LaFesta Brick & Brew Pizza

300 Central Ave, Dover, NH

This is a regular event hosted by Dee from the PaganFM radio station which occurs every 2nd Thursday of each month. We get pizza, drinks, and just have a great time talking and meeting new and like minded people in a very unofficial setting. It is a great time and all are invited to attend. Strongly suggested that you get there early to get a seat!

There is no cost to attend, but donations toward the cost of the pizza Dee buys are greatly appreciated if you are able. If not, it's not a problem. Any drinks you may want are not included in this though.

Class & Open Circle - History of Witchcraft

6:00 PM

UU Church of Haverhill

16 Ashland Street, Haverhill, MA

One figure, above all, has haunted the human imagination since humans began to imagine: the witch. Witchcraft seems always to have been with us, but the curious will
ask: where did it come from and where is it going?

Anthropologists often define witchcraft as "the use of malevolent powers by psychic means without the need for ritual or charm". This may have been so for the days of the Inquisition but not for the contemporary western world where witches work magic through spells.

This class provides a historical overview of how modern-day magic evolved from early man, the beliefs and customs of the Celts, and other ancient, Indo-European

peoples.

Class starts at 6PM followed by Open Circle at 7:30PM
