AT: The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center 208 West 13th Street New York, NY 10011 The Center is between 7th and 8th Aves
This holiday honors the Goddess Brigid, a patron Deity of healing, Smithworking, medicine, and the arts. Her contemporary forms most often manifest as the Catholic St. Brigid, the Neo-Pagan Brid and the Loa Maman Brigitte. She is honored and thanked for the first milk of the New Year and the coming of the spring. Cows and ewes begin to give milk, some early flowers and plants begin to push up out of the earth, and the days are much longer than at Yule. Imbolc symbolizes hope and growth, potential, and good health. The Goddess becomes the Bride, who marries the God and prepares for the spring when she will become pregnant once more. It is also known as a festival of light, as it celebrates the lengthening of days and return of the warm months.
This ritual will focus on healing ourselves and our communities. Many painful things have happened in our world over the past several months and many of our brothers and sisters are grieving. Using guided meditation and archetypal imagery, we will allow ourselves to let out and let go of this grief and pain, whether it be emotional or physical. Letting it out and letting it be washed away by Brigid's waters will allow us to heal and repair the bonds in our communities and lives.
This ritual will be lead by Wendi McDermott, a Votary of Brigid continuing her second year of training. Wendi grew up within the Craft, and considers herself a "Mystical Kitchen Witch". She went to the University of Florida to study Anthropology and Religion, focusing on ritual sacrifice and mysticism. She moved to Jersey City in 2007, and joined the Novices of the Old Ways at Samhain in 2008. Wendi enjoys making music, singing, violin, arts & crafts, and wine & cheese.
Before the ritual the Novices will be hosting a FREE Composting Workshop led by Monica Robles from GrowNYC. Prizes of trinkets and food will be raffled off just for attending! The workshop begins at 5:00 pm.
