Lupa [Witchvox Sponsor] presents...

Shamanic Performance Ritual for Brown Bear

When: Nov. 15th. 2009
Where: Portland, Oregon

Shamanic Performance Bear Ritual

Event Details: What: Therioshamanic performance ritual for Brown Bear work
When: Sunday, November 15, 2009, 2pm - 4pm--please be punctual, so that the ritual will not be interrupted
Where: My living room
Who: Open to the community; RSVP details under cut
Why: A revival of shamanic performance ritual in neoshamanic practice

This ritual will be focused on Brown Bear (aka Grizzly) . The purpose of this ritual will be to invite Bear into the celebration as well as serve as a personal offering for me to honor Bear and hir ongoing support in my life, and to establish a permanent altar to Bear in my home. Participants may take the opportunity, when Bear arrives, to make their own connections and celebrate this totem. Participants will also be gifted with a small tool for helping with their own work with Bear if they (and Bear) choose to do so on their own time. This ritual should not, however, be seen as a blanket "blessing" by Bear. Additionally, while my work with Brown Bear has primarily been in a healing capacity, in no way should it be seen as Bear's only bailiwick.

This will be a shamanic performance ritual; it will NOT be a "shamanic circle". It will involve me as the shaman journeying to take offerings to Bear and to invite hir to join us, and dancing in hir honor. Therefore, participants will primarily take on the role of witnesses, and will NOT be actively shamanizing. You are, however, strongly encouraged to bring drums, rattles and other noisemakers to drum for Bear. Part of the purpose of this ritual is to promote shamanic performance in neoshamanic practices, both as a spiritual/pragmatic phenomenon, and as an art form.

The ritual is open to the community at large; you need not be either a shamanic practitioner or even a magical practitioner to attend. Regardless, we simply ask that you be a respectful participant, even if you are merely curious about what this is all about.

We will have couches and some chairs available for those who are unable to sit on the floor. Also, there are two resident cats, for the information of those who are allergic. We would prefer that people not bring very young children unless absolutely necessary, as this ritual requires a great deal of concentration, and little ones sometimes like to be active and social at the times that best suit *them*, no matter what we grown-ups have to say about it! (Well-mannered older children are quite welcome in the company of their parents/guardians.)

Donations are most appreciated, but not mandatory; any monetary donations received will go first to covering costs for materials for the ritual, and then to helping pay the bills. You are also welcome to bring snack-type food to share (please have an ingredient list available for those with allergies and other dietary restrictions) ; we won't have the space and time for a full-on potluck, but things to nibble on are quite welcome and appreciated, and some will be provided.

Offerings to Bear may also be brought, and will be taken in spirit to Bear as part of my journey. Food offerings will be eaten by those in attendance (we don't believe in wasting food) ; other items (please keep them small!) will be placed on a permanent Bear altar in my ritual room.

No one will be turned away if you show up empty-handed--this isn't about "you get something only if you give something". Your presence is an offering in and of itself.

You will need to RSVP as soon as possible for three main reasons:

1. The ritual will be held in my home, and I will need to provide an address for those attending.
2. Since space is limited, I want to make sure we don't get so many people that there's no room for me to dance.
3. I need to plan for materials for participants, and so need to know how much I'll need to prepare.

Please RSVP at whishthound@gmail.com as soon as you can. The same email may be used for any questions you may have.

About Lupa and therioshamanism: I have been developing my shamanic practice, therioshamanism, for over two years. A large portion of it is based on over a decade of more general totemic and animistic practice; the past two years have been spent refining that experience into a specifically shamanic path. It is neither based in core shamanism, nor am I trained in any indigenous shamanisms; I am primarily trained by the spirits, and learn though both trial and error, and trading notes with other shamanic practitioners. I also draw on a variety of other disciplines, such as psychology (particularly ecopsychology) and mythology (particularly personal mythology and ritual practice) . I am specifically creating therioshamanism as a shamanism for the culture and community I am a part of, and while I may look to other shamanic practices for inspiration, what I create is uniquely my own. More information may be found at http://therioshamanism.com

Currently I am working on a Master's in counseling psychology at Lewis and Clark College. I am also an author of a few nonfiction titles on totemism and other spiritual/magical topics, and I am an artist, creating ritual tools, jewelry, and other things out of bones, hides, beads, and various found objects. My main website is at http://www.thegreenwolf.com
