Yule Rite and Holiday Party

When: Dec. 22nd. 2012
Where: South Park, Pennsylvania

Yule Rite and Holiday Party

Event Details: This year's Yule ritual will draw upon three Sassafras traditions: honoring the reborn Sun, looking back at the year that has just passed, and a holding a sumble—a drinking ritual whereby participants make toasts, boasts, and oaths. With the Sun as our Gatekeeper, we will honor and thank each of the Gods we have honored throughout our High Days this past year and thank them for their blessings. Individuals will have the opportunity to toast to any god, ancestor, or spirit that has aided them in the past year, boast of their accomplishments in the past year, and make oaths for the upcoming year.

1:00 PM: Doors open, kids crafts, general merriment

2:00 PM: Mother Yule* arrives!

3:00 PM: Ritual begins

Post ritual: Community Feast

What to bring:

· Praise offerings (see above)

· Your favorite beverage (alcoholic or otherwise) and a cup/vessel/mead horn for the sumbel

· A dish to share for our community feast. In honor of our ancestors, family holiday favorites are encouraged.

· Pajamas and books (new with tags still attached) for our annual collection for children transitioning into foster care.

While alcohol is permitted at this event, glass bottles and containers are not allowed at this site. Please plan accordingly. We expect everyone who chooses to drink alcohol to do so legally and responsibly.

Our rites and events are free and open to the community, but we do rely on the donations of those who are able to defray the cost of space rental and supplies. Please remember, even a dollar can help make the difference between having our costs covered and the members having to pay them out of our own pockets. Support your local Druids!

Celebrating 20 Years of Serving the Gods and the Folk

*For many years Father Yule has been able to take time out of his busy holiday schedule to visit Sassafras Grove’s Yule. However, this year he is double booked and unable to join us. Fortunately, Mother Yule is available to attend our celebration to bring presents to the children, hear their Yuletide wishes, and pose for pictures. Much like Father Yule himself, Mother Yule traces her roots to several Indo-European traditions of supernatural, Yuletide gift-givers. She claims Befana of Italy and the Germanic Frau Holda and Perchta among her ancestors, although our Mother Yule appears as the young, bright, and beautiful archetype. We feel certain the children will enjoy her special visit!
