Unitarian Universalist Pagans & Sunna announces...

Mothernight

When: Dec. 18th. 2010
Where: Charleston, West Virginia

Mothernight

Event Details: **UPDATES! UPDATES! Read below!**
You are invited to attend a modern Mothernight celebration at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Charleston, WV! Ritual will be preceeded by a Pagan Meet 'n Greet!
Mothernight is a traditional pre-Christian Germanic observance marking the beginning of Yule and honouring one's disir, the ancestral mothers and familial goddesses of each family who look after their families, seeing to their health, prosperity, and benefit. It is also a traditional time of year for making offerings to various Goddesses associated with motherhood and creativity (or all kinds) .
Our Mothernight observance will feature a faining (ritual) honouring Dame Holda, Lady of the Elder Tree and Goddess of winter, spinning and textile work, wortcunning (herbal magic) , the dead, and knowledge of the natural world, who fares across the night sky on the back of her sacred bird, the goose. Holda is the special protector of women and children, and is one of the Goddesses traditionally honoured at this time of year. In connection with this, offerings will be made to the collective disir of all present, with each participant having the chance to make prayers to their disir.
The faining will by followed by a minne symbel, or memory round, where each participant will have the opportunity to honour a woman from their family who has passed away that they feel still watches over them. Following the symbel there will be a potluck feast and activities for the kids (and kids at heart!) .
4:00pm - Pagan Potluck 5:30pm - Offerings to the landvaettir & warding of the grounds 6:00pm - Holda & Disir Faining 7:00pm - Minne Symbel 8:00 - 10:00pm - Feast and Fun!
All participants are asked to bring an item for the potluck - preferably an item that was a favourite food of one of their disir!
This is a *non-alcoholic* event - please do not bring any food or drink items containing alcohol.
Times may be subject to flex due to winter weather conditions - any updates to the event will be posted here!
Hope to see you there!
