20th Century Trained Elders Inspire New 21st Century Teaching & Learning Techniques

The Gods have told me that I need to write another book - a nonfiction research study on Wicca/Paganism teaching and learning methods. I seek information from 20th Century trained Elders about their experiences in the 20th Century as students of the Craft and how to translate those methods mostly online into NEW 21st Century teaching and learning methods - plus your bio and any other comments/links/promos you care to share that say what YOU want to say about yourself (not the gossip others would rather write as your history) .
My vision is to open up the idea of research, discussion, and solutions to the age-old question of the value of sitting on damp ground with cramped legs in uncomfortable weather with a growling stomach with all five physical senses engaged with complete individual concentration while at the feet of a guru who might be interrupted at any second by authorities putting all the participants in prison for studying a forbidden subject.
Each Elder will be asked questions, but their answers will not be tied to their names (totally anonymous answers) . The categories will develop as the information comes in or I as I complete interviews. This will offer a wide range of opinions, interests, and make it more directly related to how they learned.
In the back of the book will be an Elder biography with links, promos, whatever each Elder requests so that they have a "gift" from the author for their time helping with this study. At the same time, history has preserved only the knowledge about each Elder that they want to be read (nonfiction research not a "Valley of the Dolls" tell all) .
The goals are (1) to define what was learned in the 20th Century that separates all Pagan religious studies from mundane studies (as opposed to comparing religions) (2) find NEW ways to translate those strong spiritual learning experiences into NEW online teaching and learning that becomes more engaging and effective as more IT advances develop.
For example. Online there is a tremendous lack of concentration. I consult online all day five days a week. Usually, my clients are talking to someone else online or in person at the same time they are "chatting" with me. This is a problem that also exists in 25 - 40 students and only one teacher in a conventional classroom. Traditionally, all five senses were engaged in a conventional classroom or Pagan/Wiccan circle with a high level of concentration. At this time, there is not the same engagement online. However, not so long ago a magazine was touched and read - today we can also scratch it and smell it! That is a 50% increase in senses used - some even have recording (hearing) in them (typically for kids) and there goes another 50% increase. When we can eat the paper when we are done reading we will be perfectly set with all five senses engaged!
My point is, what ideas have been tired to make online learning more like individual face-to-face, what has worked the best, where is it going?
How can online mimic the camping men's group when a young boy is taken by the men to become one of the men?
What can make a person faint in ritual?
Can we suggested pine incense in a home?
music in line with the current activity online?
more access to virtual talking/listening?
more ITV (TV projections long distances) situations (lower cost mini-units) ?
Lessons completed in the outdoors and mailed in to the online teacher?
Intervals in person - perhaps with proctors (adjunct teachers) filling in between visits?
eating a certain item or drinking a specific tea while others are doing the same all over the planet?
How can any spiritual online learning situations be enhanced?
Online learning in the Pagan arena is the wave of the future, but will it result in the same learning and spiritual expressions without more enhancements being developed?
Today, we contrast learning from an online spiritual teacher with absolute climate control, wearing anything the student wants, eating, drinking, talking with other people in the room at will, interacting with pets, visitors to the home going in and out, reading another book, and in total safety while his or her avatar is being viewed participating in an activity within an otherworldly setting. The later activity requires only sight and limited mental engagement to be a participant in a ritual or a class. The student has the option of being completely focused or frequently distracted. The student has 100% control over their level of concentration.
The answers may never be found in our lifetime. However, this is a matter very close to my heart because in the academic world, as a teacher of disabled second language learners, instructors are taught to always work hard to make certain that all five senses are engaged. Therefore, concentration is paramount to obtain learning. My own spiritual world training was in person, with all five senses engaged, and total concentration being demanded by Elder teachers. The teacher had most of the control over the student's level of concentration.
In the academic world, I took many classes online (I finished a BA in Divinity, Minister/Director studies online, and Arizona State Teaching Certification courses) at a time when online colleges, like the primary online program at the University of Phoenix, was struggling with how much student/teacher and face-to-face time was needed to make the degree a valid representation of knowledge attained. Added to this fact, is that my doctorate is in special education, bilingual education, and sociocultural studies; I also seek answers for those with unique individual challenges. Finally, my only daughter (born 1966) has spent her entire adult life in higher education. She is Vice President of Academic Affairs for over 100+ private colleges. For the last few years, private colleges are being minutely examined by the US Department of Education via Dr. Jill Biden (a professor for 30+ years) as to the value received for the money invested in attaining a degree. How much are students actually learning? Is the outcome employment?
And now I ask, "How do these questions apply to religious training?"
The changes have been coming for a long time. "Jacobus" John Bradstreet (initiated in 1957) and I discussed this issue many times. I was in his Coven of Phoenix Rising for years. Stewart Fararr (initiated in 1970) and I discussed this issue that last time I was alone with him. I have known Gavin and Yvonne Frost (the Church and School of Wicca 1968) for many years. They offered Wiccan correspondence classes. They suffered a lot of grief for that approach. Issac Bonewits and I were close friends; we often talked about teaching and learning options. Druids always talk about training! In the early 1990’s, Scott Cunningham opened his Wiccan training books with an apology for possible seeming to have disrespect of traditional Wiccan teachers for seekers of information on the Craft outside access to a traditional local teacher. However, today a person over 18 years of age can get the title of Master of Arts in Wicca virtually (without face-to-face training) . What do current Elders think of this new approach to learning the Craft?
My academic research with a personal spiritual investment will discover that answer if I can obtain Elder individual opinions, replies, comments, references, research statistics, or interviews either in a few short words to 5, 000+ words. There are only three questions, but I encourage Elders to elaborate. University of Phoenix online classes began in 1989 and continue to have mixed results and government regulations imposed on them. I am seeking to know if Elders think they (Pagan Elders) should have the same concerns regarding all or any of the following (a) the quality or quantity of material mastered, (b) maturity, ethical practices, or other moral issues related to the students, (c) or ANY other areas you might care to discuss related to the education of those who will carry on our Pagan traditions.
(1) Name the area of Paganism where you are acknowledged as an Elder, Clergy, or Teacher and the year of that acknowledgement.
(2) In your opinion, is a title, and the quality of the online education in your field of Paganism, as valid as the traditional methods that were used when you were taught? Why or Why not?”
(3) Do you think that a person should become employed and/or acknowledged as Pagan Elder, Clergy, or Teacher in your area of Paganism without any training in totally mentally engaging ritual spaces run by a highly qualified Pagan Elder, Clergy, or Teacher within a traditional physical geographic environment (like a natural woods, stone circle, or castle) ? If not, how much in person training do you think is appropriate before being awarded one of those titles?
