Proclaimed by: Tony Griego - A WitchVox Sponsor
Proclaimed from: Hamden, Connecticut
On February 6, 2017 the Town Council of Windsor, Connecticut voted unanimously 9-0 to clear the names of two town residents hanged for witchcraft, Alse Young 1647 and Lydia Gilbert 1654. This was accomplished in an official Town proclamation which can be viewed at the Windsor Historical Society, 96 Palisado Avenue, Windsor, Connecticut 06095. They are open Wednesday-Saturday 11am-4pm. Verbal testimony was provided by several supportive persons including Reverend Charlene C. Corbett of the First Church in Windsor UCC.
On August 17, 2019 in Bridgeport/Fairfield, CT. the Black Rock Community Council and the Black Rock 375 Committee sponsored the unveiling of a memorial stone to Goody Knapp hanged in Fairfield 1653 for witchcraft. This portion of Fairfield is now part of the City of Bridgeport. Her name was clear in an official town proclamation. The memorial stone and plaque is on the property of the Burroughs Center, 2470 Fairfield Avenue, Bridgeport, CT where she was hanged. Open to the public.
Many guest speakers were present before a large crowd. Her memorial plaque reads as follows, "Near this spot, then part of Fairfield, Goodwife Knapp was hanged as a witch in 1653. She was convicted and condemned to death just six years after Connecticut carried out the first execution for witchcraft in the North American Colonies. Among Knapp's judges were two of the colony's leading citizens, Rodger Ludlow, a deputy governor and one of the founders of the Connecticut Colony and the Reverend John Davenport, a founder of the New Haven Colony.
Condemned on hearsay, Goody Knapp refused her judges' demands that she accuse others of witchcraft, stating: I must not render evil for evil...I have sins enough already." May the horrors she suffered, and the lessons to be learned from them, never be forgotten, and may her soul rest in peace."
Black Rock Community Council 2019.
A future memorial may be forthcoming for Goody Bassett 1651 hanged for witchcraft in Stratford, Connecticut.
At this time the CT WITCH Memorial is no longer seeking donations for a memorial for all eleven hanged in Connecticut as witches because proclamations are best done by individual towns. In the future we may provide a memorial at a historically significant location in Connecticut listing the names of the eleven persons hanged and a list of the thirty plus people accused of witchcraft but not hanged.
