The Sacred Coven of Ceridwen

Group Overview: Our coven is Traditional, embracing teachings that have been handed down since before the repeal of the last Witchcraft Act 1951. Traditional covens are those which existed before the witchcraft revival of 1954. We have been in Folkestone for nearly thirty years with roots from before World War Two and beyond. We follow the 'Old Religion' which retains elements of the pre-christian nature and fertility religion.

In common with other witches, we worship the Creator through a goddess representing fertility, rebirth and the summer months and a horned god representing virility, death and the winter months. Traditional witches partake in rites that are based on the cyclic nature of life, the phases of the moon and the seasons of the year.

By honouring and observing the festivals of our ancient ancestors, we affirm our sense of belonging to the natural world and all of its wonders: the fragrance of the wild wood, the song of the wind caressing the willows where two streams meet, the blossom of the cornflower embracing the bees in their relentless search for nectar, the haunting shriek of the barn owl as it glides silently and spectre-like beneath the crescent moon, the eerie glow of will-o'-the-wisp flitting across the marshland pond and the huge, orange, harvest moon hanging low in the autumn sky.

A small step can lead the seeker into this natural world to find the goddesses and the gods of old. A further step, takes the seeker into the realms of the seasonal sabbats of which there are eight: four lesser and four greater ones. Herein lie the mysteries of life and of death and of the cycles which lead us ever onward towards unity with the creator.

Traditional witches have five degrees of initiation into the four elements and spirit. Having five degrees is a logical approach to witchcraft as each of these elements, along with spirit, is represented by the five points of the pentagram. We are a robed coven and an appropriately coloured belt symbolically represents the degree attained. The 'Old Religion' is a way of life which, when approached through this degree system, shows the witch an alternative path for self development and spirituality.

It is generally, fairly difficult to find a Traditional Coven. However, we have openings for the sincere seeker and those interested in committing themselves to living by 'The Old Ways' are always welcome to apply for initiation.
