Group Overview: Here at Uffington, we conduct observances and perform open as well as private ceremonies with the intent of connecting with the past and the landscape, endeavouring to discover what our ancestors achieved through constructing and working at these ancient sites and thus to strive to work at a greater level with the wheel of the year. We do this without charge and do not shun public workings.
Like many ritual landscapes, the Uffington area is more than just the White Horse, Dragon Hill, castle and Wayland's Smithy. Workings are done throughout the greater area with different rituals and locations used according to the time of year and intend desired.
We operate a strict no dogs / no children under 12 / no smoking / no alcohol / no drugs / no anti social behaviour / no intoxication / no disruptive behaviour policy for attendance - respect is shown to Uffington and to the ritual.
There came a need, due to a question asked of me recently, to describe the difference between a: Druid, a Witch and a Shaman. I put forward the following analogy; as I see it in essence, though it probably could do with some tidying up.
The forces at work could be represented as a 'river, ' in perpetual cycle, at this point travelling from source to sea.
The Druid has a boat on which to ride the river. From this position the Druid can ride the current, observe the course, the ebbs and flows, the terrain and the conditions of weather. From experience and knowledge and the nature of the waters, the Druid can predict the journey and the probable events.
The Witch uses the powers of the water, its current energy and to facilitate 'work' to be done by the properties of the water and it's components. The Witch is in contact with the water and the material it contains, has the knowledge of their uses in the craft.
The Shaman swims in the river, becomes part of it, rides it, and is absorbed by it. Is vulnerable and at it's control. This immersion gives insight into what the river is and becomes part of it. The Shaman sees the components, feels the elements and can empathise with it. The Shaman has insight into the rivers' very nature.
Can I suggest a summary? The Druid is a sailor, the Witch a fisherman and the Shaman a diver.
