Spiritual Path: Minoan Brotherhood
Status: Established Group
Community Support: Legal Clergy... Teaching Available

Group Overview: The Minoan Brotherhood is not to be confused with Wicca. It is, in line with the vision of its founder, a distinct initiatory, lineaged, and oathbound tradition of Witchcraft exploring the Male Mysteries. See: The Minoan Brotherhood provides a safe and sacred space for Men Loving Men to nourish their spiritual wellbeing where their nature is centrally placed and celebrated as equally divine. The Minoan Brotherhood is the only initiatory tradition in the West European Isles solely dedicated to Queer spirituality.

Our Grove is currently open to suitable Seekers. There are currently no Minoan Groves in England, Scotland or Wales, however, there is nothing preventing committed Seekers from availing of air and sea travel to study with us. We are not far from the ferry terminal and are on a direct coach line to the airport. Seekers may submit a considered expression of interest via:

The Minoan Brotherhood is intended for gay or bisexual males and was founded in 1975 by Edmund (Eddie) M. Buczynski in New York City as a response to the heterosexist culture of most forms of Traditional Witchcraft prevalent at the time. These traditions believed that due to the inherent polarity of nature, magick must be performed between a male and a female, and that the Work of any group without this dynamic is redundant. This encouraged a homophobic attitude in many of the groups of the time and Eddie encountered much resistance and derision during his own journey.

Many LGBT persons were actively excluded from the Craft even up to the 1990s. Today, homophobia still exists within Wicca with even casual forms of this expressed by some who declare themselves to be enlightened and fully embracing of diversity. The rare group occasionally welcomed gay men as brothers, but only so long as they upheld the polarity rites of the tradition they were practicing. For many, this was uncomfortable, and nigh impossible. Many groups refused to work with gay men under any circumstances and Janet Farrar personally encountered this in the 1980s which she speaks of here at 21.20:

Eddie was a 2nd Degree High Priest of the Celtic Tradition before becoming a 3rd Degree High Priest in the Gardnerian Tradition and later being initiated into the Church of all Worlds and Leo Martello's Strega tradition. He created the New York Welsh Tradition (Traditionalist Gwyddoniaid) prior to establishing his New York WICA Tradition, the latter being a Gardnerian kindred tradition since it was based on a similar framework. Given the above, Eddie felt that men who love men would be best served by a system that would place the essence of their nature at the heart of a magickal tradition and so the Minoan Brotherhood was conceived to celebrate the Male Mysteries. Using the framework of the New York WICA Tradition as his foundation, Eddie wove into this his academic research and personal explorations of ancient civilisations to create the Minoan Brotherhood which, most importantly, provided a safe and sacred place for gay and bisexual men to work Witchcraft.

We are an initiatory Mystery Tradition employing three degrees of Initiation and Elevation that serve to mark varying levels of advancement, responsibility, and involvement with the Mysteries. Our Groves are each run by a 3rd Degree High Priest of the Tradition. Membership is by initiation, and we trace the lineage of each member back to Eddie Buczynski. After achieving the 3rd Degree, an individual is empowered to lead a new Grove if he so wishes. As with most Witchcraft Traditions the Minoan Brotherhood maintains its Mysteries and Rites in secret.

The Minoan Brotherhood blends elements of pre-Doric Aegean mythology (primarily Minoan-Mycenaean) and the Ancient Near East, within a ritual framework. The core beliefs of the Minoan Brotherhood centre on the worship of the ancient Cretan Snake Goddess (the Great Mother of the Aegean civilizations) and Her Divine Son (the Starry One or Bull of Heaven) . A strong current of Queer spirituality runs through the practices of the Minoan Brotherhood. Each Grove is free to develop their own practices in addition to the framework established by our core materials. We celebrate our rites at the thirteen Full Moons and eight Festivals of the Wheel. Our Festivals are largely celebratory in nature, and differ somewhat from the common Sabbat cycle associated with most Wiccan Traditions.

Only 3rd Degree Elders may function as Grove Leaders within our Tradition. The role of the 3rd Degree High Priest (Minos) is to lead the rituals, to train, Initiate, and Elevate students, and to counsel our people. Each Grove is autonomous and self-sustaining within the Tradition.

"Bull of Heaven: The Mythic Life of Eddie Buczynski and the Rise of the New York Pagan" by Michael Lloyd is a useful book to read.
