Group Overview: Greetings, in the names, songs, and dances of the Lady and the Lord.
Coven of Avalon is a well-established coven (nearly 15 years) of gay men firmly located in the Celtic Reconstructionist Tradition of the Old Religion. As witches, we celebrate a balanced path of celebration of the Mother Goddess and the Horned God, Her Consort: we understand them to be equals, with the Mother Goddess as Creator and the Horned God as Her loving Consort and Partner in Mystery. We celebrate the 8 Sabbats and 13 Esbats using a Celtic calendar, as well as we participate in the larger Witch/pagan community of the San Francisco Bay Area. We meet on the closest Friday evening to the Esbat/Sabbat (we are urban witches, after all) in San Francisco. We gather on Samhain with fellow witches and honor this day as our most special festival ritual. Our Coven is comprised of gay/bi men who are at various stages of work on their degrees. We commonly identify as witches and formally as Wiccan.
We work to bring an awareness of gay male mysteries to the Craft and to bring an awareness of the Old Religion to the gay men's communities.
Coven of Avalon uses a three degree initiatory path, plus the Initation into the Craft upon joining the Coven. 1st Degree is attained after a year and a day of practice (usually it is longer) ; candidates are expected to perform an entire ritual by themselves and to demonstrate significant knowledge of our Craft Trad. Our Witchcraft is creative, pleasurable, nourishing, experientially-based, and learning-focused: we all help each other as equals on the path. Our group is lively, fun, and we enjoy each other's company.
We are a closed community with occasional invitation-only rituals; we do not have open-to-all rituals. We make decisions by consensus, with initiates able to participate in consensus decisions upon acquisition of the 1st Degree. Although we use an Elder-initiates model, we avoid hierarchical or authoritarian methods: this model has served us well.
WE ARE OPEN to gay men who are 21 or older who live in the San Francisco area that are new to the Craft, to solitaries, and to gay male witches who are 21 or older seeking community.
