Group Overview: "DarkStar" is a traditional Gardnerian coven from a British line. Our familial descent comes from Gerald Gardner and one of his High Priestesses, Eleanor ("Ray") Bone.
The coven High Priestess was initiated into Wica in 1973 in the Central Valley Wica (CVW) branch of the Craft. She received Gardnerian training and initiations in the late 1980s and was called to serve as a Gardnerian High Priestess several years later. The present coven was founded in 2001 and is the first Gardnerian coven established in the Sacramento area.
Our philosophy and practice of Wica reflects the understanding of our path as given to us by our kin in England. To us, the Craft is an initiatory priesthood of an oathbound, experiential Mystery Tradition. We use both traditional and experimental methods to worship and honour the Gods and to work magic. We also look to the shamanistic practices of pre-Christian Europe to enhance our coven work.
We do not proselytize - nor do we seek converts. We are very selective in who we allow into our coven. We feel that we are duty bound to initiate only those persons who feel like they are "family" to us. All potential members must also have certain character traits and attitudes that we feel are necessary for a Priest or Priestess of the Wica.
Potential candidates for the coven must be over the age of 21 (no exceptions) . They must be well-balanced adults with a stable lifestyle who are able to work well with the rest of the coven. (To us, a coven is not a therapy group or a fix-all for life's problems.) Potential members need to have a good sense of humour and an open mind – and they must be a person of their word - a person of honor. As Witches, everyone in the coven is expected to fully understand the responsibilities and consequences of exercising their own free will.
All potential candidates, whether they have previous experience or not, must set aside any and all preconceived notions and/or expectations about the Gardnerian tradition. The Gardnerian tradition is not a place to just collect degrees, do research, or otherwise get what you can out of it and move on – it is a life-long path that involves a deep level of commitment to a close-knit family and to our Gods.
We maintain traditional Craft secrecy; therefore, all who are initiated into the group are oathbound to the tradition. The coven style is as egalitarian as possible, but everyone in it understands that the High Priestess has the final say – which is in full accord with our tradition's ways.
All of our training is done under the auspices of the Elders of the coven. Our focus is on assisting the individual to develop and maintain a personal, ongoing relationship with our Goddess and Her Consort, the Horned God, as part of their Priesthood. We feel that witchery and psychic development are secondary to our work with our Gods.
It is our policy to meet and get to know a potential member socially for several months before deciding if we feel they would work well in our coven. If we do not feel that someone is a good match - but might be suitable for another group - we will offer what referrals we can to other covens or groups.
Note: There are some who say that they are Gardnerian or another established tradition who are not what they claim to be. Due to our worldwide networking with others, we are able to assist in verification of those claiming to be Gardnerian, Alexandrian, and most other types of Initiatory Wica. (We are aware that many who claim to be of a particular tradition may have been subjected to deception themselves.)
Lastly, if anyone claims to be a Gardnerian and asks for money to train and/or initiate you, they are a fraud! A valid Gardnerian does not charge for training or initiating people into the tradition. However, if a Gardnerian is presenting a basic Wicca 101 class, a small fee may be charged to cover expenses such as room rental, class materials, or refreshments.

Blessed Be (and May the Gods Preserve the Craft) !
