Group Overview: Novices of the Old Ways is a progressive Witchcraft community based in New York City, this listing is for the CT chapter of Novices. Progressive Witchcraft is not based on a formal tradition, but rather a philosophy of using whatever methods are necessary to best serve the immediate and broader communities. The term “Novice, ” meaning “new”, does not mean that everyone within NOW is uninitiated or new to Witchcraft. Instead, it is meant to remind us that we never stop learning and on the path of the Craft, it is only through the open mind of the Novice that wisdom is truly attained (for we stop learning the moment we believe ourselves to be “masters”) . Our goal is to continue to learn about the Craft, ourselves, and how we can best aid the health of our community and planet.
NOW is a fluid community with members coming in from Connecticut as well as New York, New Jersey and beyond. Our practices are Wiccan with strong influences from Espiritismo, European folk traditions, Voudon, and Norse practices. The group’s workings embrace Elemental Beings, Deities from various Indo-European Pantheons, Lwa, and local nature spirits. We are eclectic, but selectively so. We invoke or evoke Deity after careful consideration of the purpose and needs of the invocation or evocation. We strive to learn from other faiths and include them whenever possible, with respect to and approval of their practitioners Novices of the Old Ways hopes to learn from the Native Peoples of the Americas and their practices and beliefs, and welcome all who are knowledgeable and interested in helping us do so. Most Sabbats are open to the public. We frequently utilize Trance Prophecy Regression (Ritual Mediumship) and Astrological influences into our rituals.
In NOW, we strive to be in constant communication with the Genus Loci, plant and animal spirits of Connecticut and the LI Sound. We use Magick and ritual to better ourselves and our community.
Novices of the Old Ways CT houses the Coven of The Well & Forge and provides various open events.
Coven of The Well & Forge:
The Well and Forge is a closed Coven for individuals who desire further instruction in the Craft and/or Dedication to the practice. It serves as the core group of NOW CT, which involves planning and leading the open Sabbats. We embrace chakra and energy work, mythological study, folk-Craft practices, Limpiesas (spiritual cleansings) , pathworkings, meditations, workshops, personal and spiritual healing, Elemental work, among other items. We meet on Esbats (Full Moons) and on New Moons, when they do not conflict with NOW CT’s open Sabbats. Well & Forge events are closed to the public. The primary goal of the Well & Forge is to provide private space for individuals and families to work on spiritual, personal, and magickal matters and to find connection to the Divine. While our practices are predominately Wiccan, the Well & Forge is open to all persons with a desire to learn Magick and forge relationships with the Gods. It is important that all attending are willing and able to honor any God or Goddess invoked or evoked at any gathering of the Well & Forge.
We are forming our CT chapter of NOW, which is branched off of our original founding group in NYC, Novices of the Old Ways and the Coven of The Lunar Temple. Both the HPS and the Coven Hand Maiden of Well & Forge are from and helped form The Lunar Temple in NYC. Our NOW group in CT is open to both individuals and families wishing to work together to create a strong base of worship and growth within our community.
Would-be members need to formally ask the Coven in person or in writing to join the Well & Forge. If the Coven is in general agreement that the person would be a good fit for the Coven and the Coven a good fit for the person, they will be invited to join. A vow of confidentiality is taken at the new member’s induction ritual, in which they vow to honor the privacy of other members of the Well & Forge. It is not our practices that we keep secret, but it is the personal matters of the other members that must be kept confidential.
The Well & Forge is open to new membership.
