House of Oak Spring

Age Range/Type: Family
Located in: Atlanta, Georgia
Key Contact: Lord Bear

Spiritual Path: traditional
Status: Established Group
Community Support: Legal Clergy... Teaching Available

Group Overview: Oak Spring is a semi-private coven in Decatur, Georgia. We formed Beltane 2000 from folks who, for twenty years, belonged to the Ravenwood coven. Interested students come to us on the basis of the strong recommendation of our current members, students and friends. Once vouched for, we trust that the individual is at least trying to lead a balanced life and is seeking a worthy path.

We maintain a small web site at www.houseofoakspring.org where folks can learn a little bit about us (but it's mostly up there so we can keep an up-to-date calendar of events and post news to the membership.) It's also a good first contact point for people like you who are seeking a spiritual home.

Oak Spring presents a series of thirteen classes spanning a period that lasts the traditional year and a day. Subjects of study include:

• Introduction to Wicca and Oak Spring
• Protocol
• Tenets
• Laws
• Mental Discipline
• Symbolism and Myth
• Energy
• Tools
• Metaphysics and Magickal Theory I, II, III
• Ritual I & II

At the end of this initial period of instruction, most students are able to decide if Oak Spring is the path/tradition with which they want to align themselves. If a student desires to continue toward initiation, he or she may request to become a Dedicant. No one will ever pressure you into initiation; it must be requested. Initiation isn't automatically granted either; it must be earned. The opinions and observations of the coven members are always heeded so that our circle remains one of love and trust. You'll be welcome to circle with us, no matter your decision. We're also willing to help you find another group, and will wish you love and light on your way. There are several good covens in the Atlanta area we can recommend.

Note: We don't instruct or initiate those younger than the legal age of consent without parental permission. Indeed, we insist on meeting our teenager's parents so they can come to trust that their child is acting responsibly.

Oak Spring is a large coven compared to most. Our organization consists of a number of initiates made up of Elders of the Third Degree, Teachers of the Second Degree, Neophytes of the First Degree, and a number of Students/Dedicants and a good number of Friends of the House. We are diverse in age and attitudes, from babies to crones, and we are sexually balanced with both hetero- and homo-sexual members. (This is important for some folks who may be seeking an all-female group or one that is the more traditional number of 9 - 13 coveners)

We do not practice “sky clad” (clad in nothing but the sky) , condone sexual initiation, include the use illegal substances in our rituals or permit drugs on the Oak Spring property. We've all worked too long and hard for our home to endanger it or our members in any way.

Oak Spring's public outreach takes the form of a long-term community project, the Oak Spring Nature Preserve. We completed renovation of our Covenstead House (office, classroom, and meeting space) so now our attention turns to the development of nature trails, environmental clean up of Snap Finger Creek and the construction of a large pavilion. We're determined to protect several endangered birds, animals, and plants indigenous to this area. We envision a place with monitored access where the local neighborhood may appreciate a small haven of green within a large urban city. It's our hope that the public comes to know us by our deeds.
