Group Overview: We are a modern, non-Reconstructionist Hellenic Polytheistic Temple in Freeport, Illinois. We once resided in Thomasville, North Carolina. We exist as a home and place of worship for all who believe in the Greek Gods. We were founded on July 8th, 2010 in High Point, North Carolina by Chris Aldridge, who is also the head Priest. The Temple was then moved to Greensboro before finding its home in Chris' hometown of Thomasville in early 2011 where it received legal incorporation into the state on April 27th, 2011. Chris chose his hometown as the home of the Temple because of the city's natural beauty and peacefulness. It was also a good place to raise his son who had been born the year before. We were the only physical Polytheistic Temple to ever openly exist in the city's history, which spanned over 150 years, which also made our Temple historic. However, Chris decided to move the Temple to Anastasia's hometown in November 2012, which is Freeport, IL, because he felt the Temple and his family would have a better life there.
We believe in the Gods of ancient Greece and that they are literal, spiritual and physical beings, all having control over our world and Universe, maintaining order and justice, and participating in the lives of humans and the functions of Nature. We are Panentheistic, meaning that we believe the Gods can either be part of or separate from Nature, and that all living things are an extension of Nature and the Gods. We do not base our religion and beliefs on the myths of ancient Greece. We believe that many of them form good allegories and teach good life lessons, but we do not believe most of them to be literal. Our religious beliefs are based on more philosophy and personal experience. While most of our members share some of the same beliefs and practices, we do not require a certain belief or practice of any member. We have members in our area and all over the United States.
We believe it's our duty to live by the Maxims of Delphi and treat all living things as we would like to be treated. We do not place judgement on others. We do not see things that do no harm as "evil" or "sinful, " and we reject any belief in an absolute evil or a "devil, " in other words. We believe that we have a Divine purpose from the Gods and that we achieve our full potential by striving toward what the Gods expect of or have outlined for us.
We see ourselves as a community of individuals, and our Temple as an extension of the Polytheistic, Pagan and NeoPagan community. We were also founded on political neutrality, meaning that we do not, as a Temple, espouse any specific political viewpoint or support any party. However, each person as a private citizen is allowed to support whatever and whoever they choose.
We have public festivals 4 times a year, but most of our religious activities are reserved for members only. We look forward to continuing to serve the Hellenic and Pagan community.
