Group Overview: The New Orleans Chapel of the Santisima Muerte (aka, La Capillita de la Santisima Muerte) consists of a public shrine and private chapel both devoted to the Mexican folk saint, Santisima Muerte. It is located on Palmyra Street, between S Olympia and S Murat Streets, in the Mid City area of New Orleans, LA. The Chapel is registered as a nonprofit organization with the State of Louisiana and Orleans Parish. Its mission is to educate the people and visitors of New Orleans about this miraculous saint and to provide services to those seeking her help.
La Santisima Muerte:
The Mexican folk saint, La Santisima Muerte, is the most recent manifestation of Death. Having chosen to manifest through the Catholic-based culture of Mexico, Death, as Santisima Muerte, is once again claiming its rightful place as the Second after the Divine Creative force. What the Divine creates, Santisima takes away. No other deity, saint, or spirit has this absolute power, nor can any of them stand in Her way.
Going from an estimated less than 100, 000 devotees ten years ago to possibly more than 3 million today, Her devotion is spreading at an amazing rate. Being carried in the beginning by the poor, the marginalized, and the drug traffickers, Santisima is making her way into more mainstream areas throughout Mexico, other Central American countries, and the U.S., with signs of a more global spread showing up on the Internet. Santisima is rising fast, and the world that She holds in Her hand will soon come to know Her.
Death does not discriminate, therefore, neither does Santisima. She accepts all as devotees, as indeed She has them all in the end. Those the Church turns away, She gladly accepts. Though officially rejected by the Church, Santisima is undeterred and continues to manifest her awesome powers. Her acceptance of the so-called morally corrupt has had negative impacts on the public’s opinion of Her, but Death is unconcerned with public opinion.
No one is lost to Santisima, as Death eventually finds everyone. Knowing Death before She comes for you makes the transition easier when your time in this life is run out. Having Santisima walk beside you in life removes the fear of Death and replaces it with peace of mind and greater self-confidence. This enriches the experience of this life and decreases the bitterness of regret at the end. Santisima is a Mother in Her own way, and we are all Her children.
