Greater New Bedford Circle CUUPS
Age Range/Type: Family
Located in: New Bedford, Massachusetts
Key Contact: Duir
Spiritual Path: Ecclectic
Status: Established Group
Community Support: Open Circles...

Group Overview: The Greater New Bedford Circle first met in the early winter of 1991. It evolved from a series of workshops presented for several years at both the Memorial Unitarian Church of Fairhaven and the First Unitarian Church in New Bedford, Massachusetts. These programs included from programs included the feminist spirituality course, "Cakes for the Queen of Heaven, " as well as a series of presentations and meetings based in part on material from the UU women's Federation, "Women and the Religion Study Group."
Recognizing the need to offer these Earth-centered, Nature-Based and woman -honoring programs to a wider audience, the "W&R Study Group" members considered enlarging the focus by starting a local CUUPS chapter that would include men as well. The word was spread by inviting friends and associates who might support the study of Pagan or "Old Religion" knowledge and ritual to join us.
GNBC CUUPS' first set of Bylaws was drafted and the chapter officially joined CUUPS Continental, our parent organization, in February 1991, as one of the earliest chapters in New England. We continue to meet at the First Unitarian Church in New Bedford, and maintain ritual tool and archival storage in the building. Some of our members have presented UU Sunday Service, relecting Earth/Nature/"Old Religion" values, as well as offering Pagan ritual experiences to the children of our Church School.
We continue to meet several times monthly to celebrate the lunar and solar holidays (Esbats & Sabbats) . Our rituals or "Circles" are always open to people of good spirit and humor who are able to respect our UU Priniciples and Purposes and honor our programs as we create sacred space.
We offer exposure, education, experience and practice of Earth-centered, Nature-based "Old Religion" and general Pagan beliefs. We are open to the Public, although for prudence's sake we must insist all people attending a ritual be 18 years of age or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Our Esbat and Sabbat Circle Rituals and Pagan Studies Classes are free of charge.
We introduce a variety of perspectives and practices, some quite elaborate and some simple, incorporating such elements as music, dance, chanting, drumming, use of ritual tools and decorated altar, and the wearing of garb or ritual clothing.
We honor many tradition: Celtic, Buddhist, Hindu, Native American, Wiccan, Cabala, as well as our own home-grown Eclectic style. We welcome diversity (with explanation) and encourage new folks to study and take part in our rituals.
