Group Overview: The Sheaves of Demeter (Congrega dei Covoni di Demetra) is a coven practicing a syncretic system of Witchcraft derived from The Strega Tradition (hereditary Sicilian Witchcraft) and Chthonioi-Alexandrian Wicca (a magical and Initiatory Ritual Mystery Tradition of Wicca) .
Initial training uses ritual elements common to modern Craft and Witchcraft practices. Ritual and magical elements of The Strega Tradition (Sicilian-American Craft) are incorporated as people become attuned to the work and with each other. Eventually, the Initiatory Ritual Mystery Tradition of Chthonioi-Alexandrian Wicca will be introduced.
We celebrate days of importance to Sicilian/Sicilian-American culture and Witchcraft; hold regular classes to learn and do magic and ritual; meet for the Esbats (New and Full Moons) which can be either celebratory or “working” rituals; and we celebrate, attune to, and turn the Wheel of the Year (using the Wiccan Eight Sabbats as our general framework) .
We also have a special interest in the development of nature contacts, such as those forces typified by the spirits and minor divinities of Greek and Italian mythology – specifically, Lare, Lasa, and Manes/Ancestors.
Specifics to Note:
“The Strega Tradition” refers to the family Craft (Witchcraft) Traditions originating in Sicily/Italy that comes down to us through the hereditary family teachings of Lori Bruno and Dr. Leo Louis Martello.
“Chthonioi-Alexandrian Wicca” is used to describe the Boston-based family of covens directly downline from Coven Chthonioi. Coven Chthonioi (and daughter Covens) grew out of the Alexandrian practice of its founders in the 1970's and is the oldest continuous Line descended from Du Bandia Grasail, the original Alexandrian Coven in the USA. As of this writing, Chthonioi-Alexandrian Wicca has at least 6 generations of Covens. Coven Chthonioi is the originator of the cycle of rituals that has become known as the Book of the Provider (Provider Cycle) . Most Covens in the Chthonioi-Alexandrian family practice a recognizable form of the Provider Cycle as part of their material and pass the original BoS (the “Burned Book” version) as well as additional material.
