Group Overview: Cani di Artimi (Hounds of Artemis) began in Spring 2004, then based in RI, as a coven of the Italian Craft. With the transplantation of its founder to NM in 2006, the Hounds went into a period of rest.
With our recent relocation back to New England, we have entered a phase of renewal and new beginnings. We do not actively seek new members, but for those who are "family", the way is always open.
Our recension or lineage is known as Cuore della Lupa (Heart of the Wolf) . We primarily work with Graeco-Roman deities, though we acknowledge the precept that "All Gods are deserving of worship." Our core mysteries center on traditions handed down through the Italian Reinassance, as well as research into the Orphic Mysteries of antiquity.
Our ritual workings include lunar observances, seasonal celebrations, and feasts of cultural importance (such as those dedicated to Deities, Saints, as well as local history and lore) .
We are firmly balanced between the bonds of family and our role as an initiatory Priesthood of our Deities. Stress is placed upon serving the Gods by serving Humanity, serving Humanity by serving one's Self, and serving one's Self by serving the Gods.
As a Priesthood, our foci are centered upon Healing Service, Creative Expression, and Ceremonial Magic. Our training system has been described as demanding. And we are proud of that!
As an extended family of Spirit, we incorporate much Italian, Greek, French, and Portuguese folk lore into our magical work. We encourage personal relationships with our Deities, our Ancestors, and our Guardians.
We use academic research, introspection, experimentation, and contemplation to foster growth in our Coven membership... seeking to aid all Neophytes (and we are all each of us always Neophytes) on the path to Mastery.
The Officers of the Coven do not rule the roost, though they are charged to do what is necessary to preserve the Tradition and the initiatory current. To the Cani di Artimi, the only licit rulers of our Coven are the Goddesses and the Gods of our Path.
While our coven is proud of its heritage, we do not boast the only way. And, while revering that noble heritage, we reserve autonomy and sovereignity to attend to our own affairs.
Membership into our coven family is not a right, but a privelege. We still follow the old laws of screening and so the process can take some time. This is a means to insure security, as well as to insure that we are truly your kin (and you likewise are ours) .
Seekers are encouraged to participate in the Stars of Elysium, which teaches and practices in a Classical Polytheist format. It is hoped that this will provide a glimpse into a Mediterranean-focused Pagan worldview, as well as open the seeker to the deep heritage of the Deathless Ones.
Time must be spent participating with the Stars of Elysium, including its Introductory Class series in Classical Polytheism and dedicating to the Classical Deities. If interest is expressed in the Coven, the coven elders will use this time to get to know you. The next step is by invitation only. However, we are greatly impressed by those who uphold the virtues of being a proper person.
For prospective applicants to our Family, we encourage a sampling of the following books to gain a feel for our path's core:
(Listings in alphabetical order)
*The Training & Work of the Initiate by Dion Fortune
* The Night Battles by Carlo Ginzburg
* Magic in the Ancient World by Franz Graf
* In the Dark Places of Wisdom by Peter Kingsley
* The Complete Art of Witchcraft by Sybil Leek
* Etruscan Roman Remains by CG Leland
* Witchcraft: the Old Religion by Leo Martello
Regardless of one's interest in our coven or not, we also recommend that anyone interested in pursuing the Mysteries reads Dion Fortune's "Psychic Self Defense."
