Group Overview: Beanachd leibh, (blessings to you)
We are a small community of people who adhere to the polytheistic beliefs and practices of the ancient Gaelic speaking peoples who populated Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Mann. Our religious practices also fall in line with cultural practices. Our local community is called Pobal nan Ealachan Naomha (Community of the sacred swans)
We are part of a small international fellowship called Comhaltacht Draiocht, our faith is called Gnatha na sinsear. (Traditions of the ancestors) or simply Sinnsreachd. The nature of our ways is that each local group is extremely autonomous. Our clergy are called Draoi or Ban-draoi (Druid or Druidess) . We honor the ancestors and we are polytheistic, worshiping a number of ancient Irish gods. We are animistic in that we believe that our gods are present the world around us and that the world around us has a strong spiritual component. Truth, reciprocity and hospitality are extremely important qualities for us. You will hear Irish, Scots Gaelic and Old Irish spoken in ceremonies. We celebrate four traditional Gaelic feast days each year, starting with Samhain at the end of summer, then Imbolc in February, Bealtain in May and then Lughnasadh in August.
Though we are focused on a very specific cultural milieu we have no requirements of race or ethnicity and one need not prove or have Irish, Scottish or Manx heritage. We are open to all races and ethnicities, all sexualities and gender identities, all socioeconomic levels and people of all ages, single or in families.
Our faith is the tribal (cosmic) faith of the ancient Gaels which was very connected to the culture. You will find no components of Celtic Christianity or of modern neo-druidry or Wicca present in what we do. Adherents to our cultural faith are called Sinsreithe (shin' shrayha) and locally we are commonly called the Ealachan (el'a khan)
There have been adherents to our ways on the South Shore for 20+ years, there has been a community on the SS for nearly 20 years. Pobal nan Ealachan Naomha is a newly established community. The community is new but some of our people are very experienced and our Draoi is a fully trained Comhaltacht Draiocht priest and has served as a community Draoi for over 20 years. Most meetings are in Whitman but we occasionally meet at the homes of members in Brockton, East Bridgewater and Providence.
