Central Mass Wildlife Rehab & Release Organization

Age Range/Type: Adult
Located in: Hubbardston, Massachusetts
Key Contact: Tala

Spiritual Path: Pagans helping Wildlife
Status: Established Group
Community Support: None Offered

Group Overview: The Central Mass Wildlife Organization, is a newly formed non- profit organization that was initially developed as a community service class project by Wiccan students training for the 2nd Degree in the Spirit of the Wolf Tradition.

Their mission is to help fund programs for wildlife rehabilitation in Massachusetts, which was brought about by a recent tragedy with a well known wildlife rehabilitator in Gardner, by the name of Sigrid Warren.

The Wildlife Rehabilitator:

“Sigi” is a licensed Massachusetts Wildlife Rehabilitator, from Gardner, who has been saving animals from all over Massachusetts for the past 14 years.
Recently, Sigi, and her rehabilitation program experienced a devastating travesty…..Someone poisoned the animals in her transitional release cages through the fence in her yard last fall, and killed 22 of them……
Sigi was absolutely devastated….
Now, Sigi is unable to release any more animals in her own fenced in yard….

The Animals:

She currently has (28) rehabilitating animals wintering over with her which will need to go into release cages this coming spring:
9 gray squirrels
6 opossums
5 mice
1 surviving red squirrel who may or may not have brain damage from the poisonous inhalant that killed his siblings
2 Southern flying squirrels
1 Big Brown female bat
3 Cedar waxwings
1 Mockingbird

Without these cages, they will have nowhere to go….
During the rehabilitation process, once the animals have fully recovered, before being released back into the wild, they have to go into “transitional cages” that are outside. They stay in these cages for a period of time, and then the door to the cages are opened, and the animals can freely come and go, until they are ready to set back out on their own.
Because of this, the students are trying to raise the nearly $2, 000 it will take to build new release cages at an off-site place from Sigi’s property, before the spring.

The Site

Joanne is the lady who will be working with, and under Sigi’s wildlife license, and the release cages will be built on her 1 acre property in Ashburnham, Mass. The property abuts acres of protected land. Joanne is a stay at home mother, who loves animals and wildlife, and has the time to devote to animals ready to be released. This has been a passion for Joanne for some time now, however, she has not been able to afford the cost of release cages. For a time she even tried to raise money herself, without any luck. Joanne is happy and excited for a chance to help Sigi and her recovering wildlife.

Our Goal:

Is to raise the $2, 000.00 necessary to build the new release cages through fund raising benefits such as the Spring Fling Rock-n-Roll Dinner and Dance party, a Mystical Marketplace Faire, fundraising raffles at both events, and donation jars out in the community.

Our Long Term Mission:

Is to assist with ongoing funding for wildlife rehabilitation programs in Massachusetts, such as Sigi’s who work with no outside funding, and exist on donations only, which are meager. Most people find animals and “drop them off” giving little or no donation, never realizing how much it truly costs for the long term rehabilitation of the animals.

Wildlife rehabilitators in Massachusetts are few and far between, and an under-appreciated, valuable resource for the wild animals they care for and save, and those of us who love the earth’s wild creatures.
