Spiritual Path: Deep Ecology
Status: Established Group
Community Support: Open Circles... Teaching Available

Group Overview: Deep ecology as we practice it at EarthStar builds on our close and personal relationship with the spirits of the land combined with our practical understanding of natural history and ecology.

EarthStar's primary philosophy is reverence of wildness, and we seek to incorporate it into daily life in a world growing ever more removed from wilderness and the wild. Our circles invoke the subtle but powerful streams of wild magick, so different from the ceremonial magic and traditional Wicca that inform most of paganism today. And we look to Nature as our teacher, and divine our personal paths from Her patterns. Our rituals all serve one overarching goal: to re-weave wild magick into the fabric of contemporary life.

Ours are mysteries of Moon and Sun, and we honor the Goddess as well as the God, although gender polarity is most definitely not a part of our practice. We study woodscraft in all its forms, and seek to become masters of the realms of Wind, Sea, and Stone. Our rituals are those of the seasons and the stars, the deep fastness of the earth and fathomless depths of the ocean. In all things, we strive for the balance that is the heart of ecology.

We are patterners; we see in close observation of nature reflections of the patterns that govern our lives and the cycles of the universe, and we use that understanding to work profound personal, social, and political transformation.

We understand that magick changes its wielder as much as its target. We accept that trade-off when we work our rites.

Ours is a scholar’s path. We value knowledge for its own sake, as well as for the power it gives us to change the world around us.

Our tools are simple: a blade, a wand, a bowl, a cup. Our cords. We don’t lug trunks full of paraphernalia into the woods. We carry out what we carry in. Our ritual garb isn’t elaborate – no flowing capes and embroidered robes. We dress for work and ease of movement in the out-of-doors.

If you find your bliss in the silence of the snowy northwoods, or the deserted strand at ebb tide, or a meadow by starlight, your place is with EarthStar.

We are not a coven in the traditional sense; we are mostly solitary workers who come together for occasional group work and to offer mentoring and training in deep ecology. We accept seekers regularly for 3-month "introductory" classes to start with. Classes are held in nearby parks and woodlands, or at a private home in College Park. We don't offer online training.
