Group Overview: SpiralHeart is a non-profit, non-hierarchical organization based in the Mid-Atlantic Region of the Eastern United States, dedicated to providing education and training in the Reclaiming Tradition of witchcraft. We offer classes, weekend workshops, and a weeklong summer retreat, fondly known as Witch Camp. Our membership and activities are open to newcomers and experienced practitioners alike who feel called to practice magic for positive change in an atmosphere of respect for all races, genders, sexual orientations, and paths to the Divine. Our rites are improvisational, experiential, eclectic and ecstatic, flowing from our authentic selves with clear intent to create the world of our desire. We honor the Goddesses and Gods, work with the sacred elements, and celebrate the ancient holidays in the Wheel of the Year at small and large local gatherings.
Every summer SpiralHeart hosts a Reclaiming summer intensive retreat, known as “Witch Camp.” Camp is guaranteed to shift your perspective, maybe even change your life! Witch Camp is open to women and men of all experience levels. Newcomers can take paths such as the “Elements of Magic” and learn the traditional Reclaiming skills of interacting with the elements, movement, sound, and mythologies. Advanced paths offer the chance to hone your magical skills, concentrate on personal healing and self-empowerment, or focus on moving your magic out into the world. The Reclaiming Tradition is particularly adept in creating public rituals and healing issues surrounding leadership and power.
Reclaiming is a tradition of Witchcraft that started in the mid 1970’s in Northern California. It was offered to the rest of the world by Starhawk through her book *The Spiral Dance* in 1979. Reclaiming is grew out of and is still strongly influenced by the Feri Tradition of Victor and Cora Anderson. The Reclaiming Tradition has adherents throughout North America and Western Europe.
Reclaiming vision is rooted in the religion and magic of the Goddess, the Immanent Life Force. We see our work as the art of teaching and making magic that empowers others and ourselves. In our classes, workshops, and public rituals, we train our voices, bodies, energy, intuition, and minds. We use the skills we learn to strengthen our ability, both as individuals and as a community, to voice our concerns about the world in which we live, and to bring to birth a new culture.
We embrace the living world as sacred and honor the cycles of nature, the earth, and the Goddesses and Gods that live within each of us. Working with the wheel of birth, growth, death, and regeneration, we see the cycles of nature, sexuality in all its diverse expressions, the elements of air, fire, water, and earth as forces that sustain us in body and spirit.
Our practice is alive and growing, something to be constantly extended, refined, renewed, and changed as the spirit moves us and the need arises. We’re not a “tradition” to be learned and recited in a formulaic manner. Reclaiming tradition requires us to develop strong personal integrity and self-empowerment.
