Rising Sun Outreach Ministry

Age Range/Type: Family
Located in: Hyattsville, Maryland
Key Contact: Charles or Fancy But

Spiritual Path: Eclectic Umbanda Voudoun Wicca
Status: Established Group
Community Support: Open Circles... Legal Clergy... Teaching Available

Group Overview: Rising Sun Outreach Ministry is a chaplaincy organization combining outreaches from prison ministry to crisis counseling. Our seven serving clergy each had their own capacities. Rising Sun Congregation (Terreiro Sol Sirgiu) is a constituent congregation of Rising Sun Outreach Ministry meeting in the home of Charles and Fancy Butler on Monday nights. We practice an open spirituality, fusing elements of Umbanda, Voudoun, Wicca, and the faith of any participant coming to study. We pray with those who pray, we weep with those who weep, we encourage, we embolden, we laugh, we cry, we celebrate. We focus prayers and energy for family and friends.

We celebrate American Umbanda, based onthe spiritual ancestors of this land of ours. Come and celebrate your roots.

Rev. Charles Butler is working in Prison Miinistry and is trained in Wicca, Santeria, and Umbanda. He is in correspondence with 10 prisons in Miissouri, two in West Virginia, one in New York, and one in Maryland and regular prison visits at Jennifer Road and Ordnance Road Detention Centers. Rev. Peggy E. Thompson runs our prison outreach office in Ohio.

Rev. Fancy Butler was trained as a Voudoun priestess in Haiti at the age of 14 as She Who Walks Between. She is an elevated Mambo in that tradition and also a practicing Roman Catholic.

Rev. Sandy Harris (RedBird) is a counselor with Inova Hospital System in Fairfax County, Virginia, often called upon to minister to family's who have lost loved ones through suicide. Crisis Counseling and simply being present is an art. She is also affiliated with a military chaplaincy organization.

Rev. LuAnn Beck-Day runs Educating Our Own, a network of home schooling parents in Maryland. If you wish to educate your children at home, she is glad to speak with you. Educating Our Own does not require a statement of faith to act as your required supervisor.

Rev. Peggy Thompson is our Federal prison liaison in Ohio, writing prisoners and connecting with their chaplains where possible.
