Elven Coven
Age Range/Type: Adult
Located in: Duluth, Minnesota
Key Contact: Sarah SwampWitch
Spiritual Path: Witchcraft
Status: Established Group
Community Support: Teaching Available

Group Overview: The Witchcraft that Elven Coven practices is a non-hierarchal, non-initiatory, non-deity based, non-religious, anarchical, ecstatic practice that stresses taking responsibility for oneself, forging a unique and personal relationship with the inter-connectiveness of all things, and questioning everything. This form of Witchcraft was initially forged in the swamps and woodlands of northern Minnesota (which is why we sometimes refer to our tradition as "Swamp Witchcraft") but can be adapted to urban living just fine. The tradition considers Philosophical Anarchy to be something to be strived for. The Witches do have a definite 'moral code’ that is simply: "Do what ever you choose to do, but if the sh*t then hits the fan, you may not duck, no matter what."
Elven Coven has no formal initiation or degree structure. When our Witchlings are ready, they become Witches. When they feel they are ready to lead, they lead. Coven leadership is whoever has the best handle on what needs to be done at the moment. Any other decisions are made by doing games of scissors-paper-rock . .
The fact that the coven has no formal structure is however NOT saying that the group has no rules or that anything goes or that we expect nothing of ourselves in order to do our Craft... in fact, we believe that being a Witch comes at a cost that must be paid in sweat and in work and in commitment and in sacrifice.
In recent years our family group has taken to celebrating the Sabbats mainly as a way of out-reaching into the larger "Pagan Community", however more important are the many special dates that we celebrate that would make no sense to anyone but us. We do occasional formal rituals but mostly do spontaneous simple Magick, as we believe in the Economy of Energy (Do what needs to be done - but no more or no less than what is necessary - when it needs to be done.) . What little planned ritual that we do is mostly done at the Waning Balsamic Dark Moon. We believe that Magick works because of the Will of the person casting it and that Will is a combination of energy and intent. We teach that no props are needed to do Magick, however we do love our Witchy toys and tools! We do not do ritual skyclad (too many damn bugs in the summer, too damn cold in the winter) , nor do we dress in robes. We are 'torn blue jeans and old sneakers' Witches...
Our family group is no longer active in our local Alternative Spirituality "community".and we do not, as a group, hold or participate in 'Public Rituals' .
It is possible that we might accept applications for apprentice Witches - Please note: since we first advertised this fact we have been deluged with people wanting to join us. Because our group is 'family', deciding who to let into our group has been almost impossible, so while we are still willing to apprentice the right person, you will more than likely have to jump through hoops to get in. We expect apprentices to be smart and have their sh*t together.... so, if you think you might like to join us, AND if you have a good sense of humor, enjoy small furry animals, are willing to put up with a method of teaching that shifts the responsibility away from the teacher and places it on the student, and are NOT a fundie-veggie--head, give us a holler.
Note 1: If you want Wicca, this would not be us. Please look elsewhere.
Note 2: The name of our group is in part a family-in-joke and in part a riddle. It does not mean that we play with glittery "fairies". Here is a hint: "Elves are wonderful. They provoke wonder. Elves are marvelous. They cause marvels. Elves are fantastic. They create fantasies. Elves are glamorous. They project glamour. Elves are enchanting. They weave enchantment. Elves are terrific. They beget terror." -- Terry Prachett, Lords and Ladies
