Group Overview: Oakdale Grove was formed in 2013 from Oakdale Protogrove which had existed since 2011. Currently, Oakdale Grove is chartered under the Reformed Druids of North America (RDNA) , though it often dances a fine line between the aforementioned and the New Reformed Druids of North America (NRDNA) , a more neopagan offshoot.
The RDNA began in 1963 at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota as a protest against mandatory chapel attendance, claiming that coerced religion can detract from spiritual experiences. In 1964, chapel attendance was dropped as a requirement, though the RDNA endured and grew, since people were finding real meaning in a made-up druid ritual.
The RDNA was not intended to be a religion, but rather a philosophy that one can apply to their existing spiritual beliefs. It was also not considered to be neopagan since the founders were from diverse religious backgrounds, the main founder even entered the seminary and became an Episcopal priest. Theologically, the RDNA had a universalist approach while it flirted heavily with pantheism and panentheism.
Organizationally, the RDNA took some inspiration from the Order of DeMolay, an offshoot of Freemasonry. The RDNA focuses largely on ceremonial druidry, rituals, and rites of passage. The Council of Dalon Ap Landu, the governing body comprised of Reformed Druids who have entered the priesthood, has traditionally been chaired by the elected Arch-Druid of Carleton College.
Reformed Druidry has survived at Carleton College in various forms since 1963, much in the way a fraternity hands down its traditions from a graduating overseer to an underclassmen. This means that Reformed Druidism is the only modern tradition that is chaired by someone who typically has some of the least experience, but also has new ideas and a progressive outlook.
Oakdale Grove maintains ties with Carleton College Grove and many other Reformed Druids and other druid orders. Oakdale Grove welcomes new membership, though we do not yet have a formal teaching curriculum available. We have rituals outside, often in public places, except in the event of hazardous weather such as lightning or a polar vortex. We do not utilize a centralized location, and sometimes we travel to Carleton College to make use of the arboretum. We encourage the use of ritual robes, and unbleached white linen is the recommended fabric. Oakdale Grove typically uses sacramental whiskey in ritual, therefore we ask that seekers be at least age 21.
