Group Overview: MID- Missouri Pagan Pride
Mid-Missouri Pagan Pride is a non-profit organization with an open membership. Persons under 18 need parental permission to participate. Like Pagan Pride we are open to all Pagans and Pagan Friendly persons who support religious tolerance and understanding. Our primary activity is sponsoring a Pagan Pride Day Celebration for Mid-Missouri- located in Columbia but welcoming all Pagans and Pagan friendly persons in this geographic area. This celebration will occur on September 27, 2009 so please mark your calendars. To make this happen we have fundraisers through-out the year. E-mail us at midmopaganpride@yahoo.com or call Taz at 573-489-3805 or Rose at 573-289-3657 to get involved. We are looking for committee volunteers, vendors, entertainers and workshops.
Our definition of Pagan
A Pagan or NeoPagan is someone who self-identifies as a Pagan, and whose spiritual or religious practice or belief fits into one or more of the following categories:
Honoring, revering, or worshipping a Deity or Deities found in pre-Christian, classical, aboriginal, or tribal mythology; and/or Practicing religion or spirituality based upon shamanism, shamanic, or magickal practices; and/or Creating new religion based on past Pagan religions and/or futuristic views of society, community, and/or ecology; Focusing religious or spiritual attention primarily on the Divine Feminine; and/or Practicing religion that focuses on earth-based spirituality.
Why Pagan Pride?
Like gays, lesbians, and bisexuals, Pagans cannot always live their lives openly and honestly because of the fear that surrounds them. Pagans who live openly often face job discrimination. difficulties with landlords, neighbors, harassment, up to and including assault and battery Because the issues and goals are similar -- to reduce societal xenophobia until no one needs to hide his or her "difference", whether that be who he loves or who he worships -- the phrase "Pagan Pride" was borrowed from Gay Pride, Pagan Pride owes a deep debt of gratitude to the Gay Pride movement for its achievements in furthering equality and understanding. We hope we can improve attitudes towards earth-based spiritual practices as much as Gay Pride has towards sexual orientations. We wish not only to reduce discrimination against us, but to present the value that our paths can bring to society, while emphasizing that we do not seek converts but ask that each person honor the Divine in the manner that seems best for him. Members of modern Pagan and NeoPagan religions tend to value ecology as an extension of their view of the Earth as sacred and all life as interconnected; hold a paradigm that embraces plurality, supports civil rights, and advocates personal freedom; hold ethical standards that require personal responsibility; be well-read and interested in learning; focus on self-help, emotional and psychological growth; and be keenly aware of each person's right to believe as he chooses, believing that to impose one's beliefs on another is harmful.
Sixth Annual Mid-Missouri Pagan Pride Day: SUCCESS!
Pagan Pride Day 2008 was a complete success! Vendors met or exceeded their expectations, our attendance met that of the competing venue a few blocks away, fun was had by all (including the local constabulary/peace keepers) and our community efforts yielded over THREE HUNDRED POUNDS of food and clothing for those in need! We would like to thank our Keynote Speakers and featured workshop presenters are Joyce and River Higginbotham, Llewellyn authors of "Paganism: An Introduction to Earth-Centered Religions" and "Pagan Spirituality". We would also like to thank last year's entertainers: Songbyrd from Kansas City; The Deva Dancers; Moon Holloran-Leady; Dances of Universal Peace featuring Linda and Ed; and Carolyn and Friends! The entertainment was stellar! Make our 7th Annual Mid-Missouri Pagan Pride Happen! September 27, 2009 Peace Park, UMC, Columbia Noon-6PM Volunteer! Vend! Preform! Attend and Bring Open Minded Friends and Family!
