The Sojourner Circle

Age Range/Type: Adult
Located in: Greenville, North Carolina
Key Contact: Michelle J.

Spiritual Path: Modern Witchcraft
Status: Established Group
Community Support: Open Circles... Teaching Available

Group Overview: What is Modern Witchcraft?
Modern Witchcraft, as it is taught at The Sojourner Whole Earth provisions, and celebrated within The Sojourner Circle, is a spiritual path of personal growth and transformation for adult men and women. It is a pagan path of wisdom, reason, personal power and of responsibility that stands proudly on the strong foundations of our ancestors, honors the old ways and explores with reverence for all Godforms. However, we look to the future and strive to create a new way of life in a modern world, to blend modern scientific developments with ancient truths and to evolve “religion” into “spirituality” so that we may avoid the limitations and pitfalls that plague our modern culture.

The path of the witch becomes a lifestyle that walks in rhythm to natural cycles, opens one up to communication with all the spiritual realms and gives the spirit a framework for understanding and learning from this physical existence with grace. This is a path toward enlightenment and all that we do here is for the highest good of all involved, harming none. We strive for a state of perfect love and perfect trust, at one with the Divine.

How is the group organized?
This is a facilitated study and support group for anyone who would like to learn in a formal setting, do more, go deeply, and journey with friends of like mind. This is *eclectic Modern Witchcraft* for individuals forging their own path and offers an alternative to traditional Wiccan training within the coven setting. All adults with an open heart and mind are welcome to join us in class. Classes are primarily prepared and led by Michelle Jenkins, owner of The Sojourner. Guest teachers are brought in whenever possible so that we can experience many different viewpoints. Previous graduates of the class form an an affiliation of solitary witches that we call The Sojourner Circle, or “The Tribe.” We work together to celebrate, to build the community, to lead and to mentor new students. Circle members often join us for Thursday classes as our honored guest. The Sojourner Circle is very much a spiritual family.

What happens in class?
Every class begins with a support group style check-in, where we introduce ourselves and share something about our current life. We smudge ourselves with sage, light our class candle to create sacred space. We then have the formal class, take a break, and then have a spiritual experience such as a guided meditation or ritual. We then talk about the experience a little before the circle takes hands in prayer, healing and thanksgiving. We then open the circle by wishing each person in turn, Namaste. This means, “The Spirit in me, honors the Spirit in you.” All 48 classes together are roughly equivalent to the knowledge and experiences gained in traditional first degree initiatory programs, and well into second degree material. Each class includes a very detailed, color hand-out to add to your book of shadows.

How do I become a Witch?
With hard work, dedication and at least a year and a day of formal study before you make a self-initiation. After that it is between you and the Divine. It starts by “seeking” knowledge and mentorship. Come to at least 3 classes as a Seeker. You may choose to dedicate to a year and a day of training as part of a Sabbat ritual after that. After all 8 sessions have been completed you may declare your intent to self-initiate into the Craft. At this time you will choose/and be accepted by a sponsor from the Sojourner Circle who will work closely with you on 6 more weeks of in-depth journeys into the mysteries and testing. If you miss a class, you can make a private appointment with any circle member to go over the material and do the exercises together. When all lessons are complete to yours and your sponsor’s satisfaction we will hold a ritual in your honor so that you may hold your public self-initiation ritual surrounded by your friends and mentors in the Craft. All those who have graduated and initiated may choose to become members of The Sojourner Circle.

What topics will be covered during the year?
This course will include topics on neo-paganism, Wicca, occult lore, modern science, psychology, Wiccan ritual forms and tools, magick and spell craft, divination, healing arts, meditation, herbalism, metaphysics, psychic development, and all kinds of inner journey work and spirit communication.

How is the course organized and what does it cost?
Wheel 1: Classes begin in January and are held Thursday nights from 6:00-9:00 pm, for 48 classes (with 4 weeks of break for holidays throughout the year) divided by topic into 8 sessions. Each session is named for the solar holiday, or Sabbat, we’ll celebrate on the last night of the session. After class we have a tradition of walking to Armadillo Grill on 5th street to share a "tex mex" meal and drinks.
A 6 week session costs $90, with 10% discount on books and additional materials pertaining to the coursework. Individually, the classes are $20.
Wheel 2: Weekend workshops begin in June and meet every few weeks on Saturdays for 4 hours (Times vary during the day) and combine 2 of the weekly lessons into one intensive workshop. Individual workshops are $35. Preregistration for the whole session (3 workshops) is $90 and comes with a 10% discount off of class books and supplies.
A family discount of $5 off per person per workshop is offered for students within the same family attending together.

Rules and Requirements to join us:
No prior knowledge or experience are necessary to join us.
Must be an adult over 18, or I need to speak to the parent for permission.
Please be sober and clear-headed when in class and ritual. This includes any prescription or over the counter medication that would make it inadvisable for you to drive yourself home afterwards. Stay home and take your medications safely!
All discussions are open for lively, respectful debate. No flaming, name-calling or otherwise rude behavior will be allowed at any time and will get you chucked out, then and there.
We build in our circle an atmosphere of respect, safety, discretion, privacy and acceptance. Do not threaten that atmosphere. We can be unique, walk different paths, and think diverse things in safety here.
