Group Overview: The Circle Of Solitaries differs from other groups in terms of function, organization and style. Many pagans and occultists object to the way groups operate and choose to explore their art alone. This solves many social problems but severely limits access to valuable resources which only community can provide such as moral support and guidance. Common complaints about how groups are run often include, but are not limited to, the following: 1) lengthy application process and intrusive standardized questionnaires. 2) anonymous relationship with organization through internet or mail. 3) hierarchies with too many degrees between the lowest and highest ranks. 4) oaths of secrecy and/or loyalty. 5) secret knowledge available only to advanced members. 6) membership dues and fees beyond actual expenses.
The COS is based on the following principles:
Community. This is a group of friends, not a fanclub or online group. There are no applications, questionnaires, interviews or selection committees. Either we like each other or we don't.
Face-to-face contact and interaction. We come together in real time on the physical plane.
Full disclosure of all principles, objectives, program and structure. Newcomers are informed of 100% of all prohibitions, requirements, and standards.
Progress is reckoned by the individual, not some "higher" authority. There are no ranks and all titles refer only to actual jobs and their respective duties.
Focus on the core objective of occult study and practice. The COS does not make a profit nor does it provide income or status for any group or individual.
No-budget operation. We hold no treasury and charge no fees. We accept donations and encourage barter.
Community is important to human souls. Gathering together to share information, experiences, common interests and pursuits is elementary to a healthy psyche. Individuals with more eclectic and idiosyncratic tastes are naturally inclined to go an extra step or two to find their own kind. This is a sign of health and vitality.
It is also natural for beginners at any undertaking to seek out people of more advanced knowledge and experience from whom to learn. The trick-or-treaters they interview on A&E documentaries can't be all there is! Pop-culture icons like Robert Anton Wilson and Grant Morrison have become beacons to aspiring occultists for a reason.
Having considered the frequently disastrous outcome of cooperative occult study, the COS has looked elsewhere for examples from which to learn. The COS is designed around existing non-occult organizations that are deemed successful in whole or in part.
The COS is designed to serve the desired functions of an occult group without getting in the way of the individual who is its sole intended beneficiary. Those functions are social interaction, mentoring, and the pooling of resources. No occultist needs ranks, leaders, rules, oaths, or a sense of "belonging" to any group. Those trinkets appeal to the detritus of institutionalized religion and are of no use to those whom the COS was created to serve.
The lodge system is patterned after the hierarchy of Catholic and Byzantine religion, reflecting a "from the top, down" mentality. Our group is based on the monastic tradition, demonstrating a "from the bottom, up" mentality. People, ideas and material resources are different things and must be treated differently. People have needs and these must be considered first.
The needs of a beginner undertaking any challenging pursuit are the same whether it be weightlifting, music, foreign languages or whatever. In the case of occultism, these may be prioritized. First one needs a social circle from which to draw ideas, experiences, encouragement, advice and companionship. Second, one needs a sharing community to economize the resources required for successful study and practice. Third, a mentor-student relationship is mutually beneficial when honest and free of ulterior motives. Finally, if one were to find such blessings as these, a trustworthy means of maintaining and administering them is required. These needs must be considered in this order or the entire endeavor mutates into something unworkable.
The COS makes possible an occultists' social group, the pooling of personal resources, mentor-student relationships and the management of all three. Within the COS are study groups which allow students with the same interests to work together without disrupting the Solitaries or the COS in general. We host monthly meetings in Asheville.
